The Thuringian transport entrepreneur Jens Keiner from Reinsfeld near Arnstadt has expanded his fleet with a new three-axle saddle low-loader of the type SDS 470 T from Fliegl. According to the company's information, the vehicle will be used nationwide for the transport of heavy construction machinery such as wheel loaders, crawler excavators, asphalt pavers and rollers.

Structure and technical data

The low-loader has an overall length of 13,300 millimeters; the low-bed platform including the rear gooseneck measures 9,100 millimeters. According to Fliegl, the permissible payload is 25,200 kilograms; the technical payload is 38,200 kilograms. The empty weight amounts to 9,800 kilograms.

The loading surface in the low bed can be widened by side extenders to up to three meters. The floor as well as the extenders consist of 70 millimeter thick larch wooden boards, which, according to the manufacturer, provide a high friction coefficient for load securing. The gooseneck is clad with steel sheet and contains a storage compartment for planks.

Loading

and securing equipment

The trailer features a 3,800 millimeter long and 650 millimeter wide excavator boom trough with four integrated lashing holes, each able to carry a pulling force of 5,000 kilograms. Two pairs of wheel cradles with depths of 400 and 350 millimeters enable the transport of tall wheel loaders without exceeding the permissible vehicle height. When not in use, the cradles can be covered, creating a level loading surface.

For securing the load, according to the manufacturer, 22 tie-down eyes in the outer frame as well as four fixed and six swivel lashing eyes on the gooseneck are installed. Additionally, Jens Keiner had four folding lashing eyes with a pull force of 10,000 kilograms each integrated into the low-bed floor. 16 rung pockets can be used as ring lashing eyes if needed.

Axles, suspension and control

Fliegl equips the saddle low-loader with SAF drum brake axles and twin tires. The axles are laser-measured to reduce tire wear and lower fuel

consumption, according to the manufacturer. The first axle is designed as an automatic lifting axle with forced lowering and starting aid. It can be raised at speeds up to 25 kilometers per hour and when it carries 30 percent of the load. This can also be controlled from the towing vehicle to improve the traction of the drive axles.

Via a display in the cab, the driver can monitor the axle loads. The values are provided via the EBS-Canbus system. The last axle is trailing-steered; an automatic reverse lock is activated via the reverse light or manually switched.

Ramps and loading access

The two split steel ramps with a cable pull extension can be hydraulically raised, lowered and moved sideways. They are 4,200 millimeters long and 750 millimeters wide. In combination with the 950 millimeter long rear gooseneck, a shallow loading angle results, which, according to the manufacturer, also enables loading of machines with low ground clearance. The ramps and the rear

gooseneck are clad with 22 millimeter thick hard rubber, which provides additional grip especially when loading rollers.

“We had a trailer from Fliegl before and were satisfied with it; the price is right and Fliegl is based in Thuringia just like us,” explains company chief Jens Keiner.

Safety and permits

According to Fliegl, the safety equipment includes a LED beacon, four extendable warning signs with beacon holders that extend to a width of three meters, two LED work lights at the rear and a continuous splash guard across the entire vehicle width.

When collecting at the Fliegl plant in Triptis, a comprehensive vehicle appraisal is prepared, which serves as the basis for applying for the exceptional permits under Paragraph 70 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO).

Use and warranty

According to the company, the saddle low-loader will be in operation for around 100,000 kilometers per year. Fliegl provides a 15-year warranty against rust-through on the hot-dip galvanized and passivated chassis. (av)
