Thermo King has expanded the compatibility of its refrigeration units for diesel trucks to the biofuel B100 FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) under the EN 14214 standard. This will allow the devices to run on 100 percent biofuel in the future, without the need to adjust maintenance intervals or warranty terms. The certification is part of the company's sustainability strategy, which belongs to the Trane Technologies group.

Biofuel B100 from Rapeseed Oil vs. HVO Diesel

The biofuel B100, which is often produced from rapeseed oil, reduces greenhouse gas emissions over its entire life cycle by up to

60 percent, according to Thermo King. Particulate matter emissions could be reduced by up to 78 percent. In total, up to 50 tonnes of CO2-equivalent per unit could be saved. The prerequisite is that the fuel used complies with the European EN 14214 standard and that the refrigeration unit has been prepared for this use.

As early as 2021, Thermo King had approved its engines for use with HVO diesel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). HVO100 is a synthetic diesel fuel derived from hydrogenated plant oils ("Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils"). It is produced from biogenic residues and waste materials such

as used cooking oils and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional diesel by up to 90 percent.

With the additional certification for B100, the manufacturer now broadens the choice of alternative, renewable fuels. The aim is to drive decarbonization in the transport sector and to offer operators of non-electrified fleets more sustainable options, according to the company.

Factory-installed B100 option for the new Thermo King TX Series

A factory-installed B100 option is now available for all new models of the TX series. According to Thermo King, the performance of the units remains fully intact, while

the emissions are reduced significantly.

With the new TX series, Thermo King is modernizing its truck refrigeration unit portfolio and replacing the previous T-series. The models cover fresh and frozen transport, are designed for single- and multi-chamber applications, and offer up to 17 percent more cooling capacity, 7 percent better fuel efficiency, and up to 40 kilograms less weight, according to the manufacturer. Tested at temperatures up to 55 degrees Celsius, the series targets lower life-cycle costs and easier maintenance: maintenance intervals of 2,000 hours, the monitoring system "ServiceWatch" and the "BlueBox" telematics are intended to reduce
