The automotive supplier Purem by Eberspächer has introduced a steel battery housing that is set to be used in electrified vehicles in the future. With the new solution, the company expands its product portfolio in the field of e-mobility.

While so far aluminum has been used primarily for battery housings, Purem by Eberspächer

is opting for steel to offer a more sustainable alternative. The high strength of the material should provide improved protection of the housings in collisions or when foreign objects intrude. Special weld seams and sealing solutions, according to the manufacturer, ensure reliable sealing of the battery modules and thus increased safety in the

event of damage.

Another advantage, according to the company, lies in material efficiency: steel enables comparable stability at thinner wall thicknesses and thus can contribute to lighter housings. In addition, production is more cost-effective and associated with lower CO₂ emissions. Steel is also considered highly recyclable.

The battery housings are developed to meet

customer specifications. In this process, virtual process planning and Simultaneous Engineering are used to tailor aspects such as ventilation, cable routing, and module assembly. Purem by Eberspächer cooperates in development with strategic partners and leverages existing competencies in material processing as well as in welding and sealing technology laboratories.
