The logistics service provider Gebrüder Weiss is driving the electrification of heavy-duty road transport: as of now, two new fully electric trucks are in daily general cargo service at the headquarters in Lauterach (Vorarlberg, Austria). Two additional vehicles are already in operation at the Wels (Upper Austria) site, as the logistics provider announced to the press on September 3.
The trucks of type “Mercedes eActros 600” offer, according to Gebrüder Weiss, 600 kWh battery capacity, 500 kilometers of range and
600 kW drive power. They charge at company-owned fast charging points in 30 to 90 minutes and, according to the logistics provider, are suitable for both short-haul and long-haul transport.
Since public charging options for E-trucks are still insufficient according to the company, Gebrüder Weiss has erected its own charging and energy-supply system in Lauterach. Two transformer stations with 1,600 kVA each supply up to 16 fast charging points, eight of which are already active. The energy comes from the
company’s own photovoltaic system or certified green electricity.
Another advantage of the own charging infrastructure, according to Gebrüder Weiss: The vehicles can recharge while loading or unloading goods, eliminating additional dwell times. “Our customers also expect reliability and punctuality even with emission-free transports,” said Stefan Oberhauser, Branch Manager, Land & Logistics Vorarlberg at Gebrüder Weiss. “With our own energy supply and the new vehicle solutions, sustainable road transport can be ideally realized.”
To enable nationwide tours to be planned independently
of external charging stations, Gebrüder Weiss is currently installing further own charging stations at its sites in Vienna, Hall in Tirol, Altenrhein (Switzerland) and Aldingen (Germany).
By the end of 2025, the e-fleet in Austria is to grow by a total of 14 electric trucks – five of them in Lauterach alone.
