The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML has, as part of the innovation project “SKALA” (Scalable AI and Blockchain Solutions for Automation and Autonomization in Value Creation Networks), released Open Source components for logistics for the first time. This was reported in a press release dated July 22. Open Source, or open-source software, means that the source code of software is publicly accessible and can be viewed, modified, and redistributed by others.

The applications were already presented to an international expert audience from June 2 to 5, 2025, at the transport logistic in Munich. According to the institute, they met with great interest there; now the components are also

freely available online.

The Open Source release marks a milestone in the development of federated, secure, and automated process structures for production, logistics, and supply chain management, the Fraunhofer IML is convinced. “With SKALA, we demonstrate how Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain can be intelligently combined in an open, modular ecosystem. The release of the first Open Source components underscores our goal to provide practical tools for resilient and sustainable value creation networks. We thereby create not only technological progress but also a new quality of collaboration in digital logistics,” explains Prof. Michael Henke, Institute Director at Fraunhofer IML.

The following application solutions are now available as Open Source:

  • GreenComplAI – AI
  • Assistance for Circularity Management: With AI-supported plausibility checks, “GreenComplAI” aims to assist companies in the sustainable transformation of their supply chains. According to the press release, sustainability data is digitally collected and automatically verified. A dashboard provides real-time insights, for example, into resource flows and product-specific circularity data such as recycling rates. GreenComplAI is committed to uncovering the hidden sustainability potential in the supply chain. This approach is said to be applicable to any aspect of supply chain transparency, according to the provider.
  • SiMBA – Financial Innovation for Dynamic Resource Utilization: According to Fraunhofer IML, “SiMBA” is an AI-based pricing and billing system that supports companies in the dynamic pricing of
  • their products and services. The algorithm in SiMBA reacts in real-time to demand and utilization fluctuations and enables the optimization of resource allocation and cost efficiency through elastic pricing, according to the announcement. Version 1.0 is now available, with an extended version to follow in December 2025.
  • InstaSCAN – Intelligent Digitization of Documents: Logistics remains heavily paper-driven, particularly in processes of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). “InstaSCAN,” according to Fraunhofer IML, is a web-based service designed for low-threshold and flexible digitization of paper-based transport documents. Using large-language models, information is automatically extracted and provided as structured data – including ERP interface for system integration. This realizes another step towards a fully
