DHL Global Forwarding, the air- and sea freight specialist of the DHL Group, and the industrial and consumer goods company want to take their long-standing sustainability partnership to a new level. The two companies are already working on projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to a press release dated September 17 — for example through the optimization of transport modes and the consolidation of shipments. In the new phase of the collaboration, shipping lines, on behalf of DHL Global Forwarding, will use maritime fuels based on waste and residues (the so-called Sustainable Marine Fuel, SMF).

DHL Global Forwarding, according to the company, attributes the

resulting emission reductions to Henkel via the so-called Book & Claim procedure. This is intended to enable DHL to replace fossil fuels within its own network directly with sustainable fuels and to assign the environmental benefits to paying customers — even if their shipments are not physically transported with the respective transport means. DHL Global Forwarding intends to use Sustainable Marine Fuel (SMF) for the majority of Henkel's sea freight volume.

„The expansion of our partnership is another milestone on our joint path to decarbonisation,“ said Amanda Rasmussen, Chief Commercial Officer at DHL Global Forwarding. „By combining Henkel’s ambitious climate strategy with our sustainable logistics

solutions, we demonstrate that progress in decarbonising supply chains is already possible today. We hope that this agreement will also inspire other companies to switch to low-emission transport solutions with Sustainable Marine Fuel.“

Joint Path to Decarbonisation
