The logistics service provider Dachser has been awarded the German Packaging Award 2025 in the category "Logistics & Material Flow." According to the company, the reusable transport system "Retail Box" developed by Dachser was recognized, which is designed for use in general cargo logistics. The transport solution is particularly suitable for supplying retail stores in industries such as fashion, cosmetics, and electronics.

"We are pleased with the recognition for our new development in general cargo logistics," explains Stefan Hohm, Chief Development Officer (CDO) at Dachser. "We invest in innovation when it brings a clear added value for customers and can

be used as a standard across the entire logistics network."

Cooperative development with technology and logistics partners

The Retail Box was developed in collaboration with several partners. Wanzl, as a specialist in transport carts, was responsible for building the robust, lockable roll containers in two sizes (Euro and half-pallet size). The software platform of the start-up Logistikbude ensures tracking. Telekom provides connectivity via mobile communications with technologies such as NB-IoT, LTE-M, and 2G.

Flexible application in different segments

Originally designed for hanging and lying fashion logistics within Dachser Fashion Logistics, the Retail Box is now also used in other areas

of the consumer goods industry - for example, for sensitive or valuable products. However, the system is not intended for food transport.

Resource conservation and transparency in the transport chain

The reusability of the transport solution helps reduce packaging waste. For example, when transporting hanging suits, over the lifecycle of a Retail Box, a waste reduction of over four tons can be achieved compared to single-use systems. Digital tracking enables continuous transparency in the circulation of the containers.

"Sustainability was also a focus for the Retail Box. On one hand, the cargo space in the truck is optimally utilized. On

the other hand, the transport solution is reusable. For hanging suits, for example, packaging waste is reduced in the lifecycle of a Retail Box by more than 4,000 kilograms compared to single-use systems," says Uwe Riechel, Department Head Dachser Fashion Logistics.

Award ceremony at Fachpack in September

The award was given by the German Packaging Institute (dvi), which annually honors innovations in packaging technology. A total of 37 solutions from different categories were awarded. The official award ceremony will take place on September 23, 2025, during the Fachpack trade fair. The winner of the Gold Award will also be announced.
