Several waves of protest have shaken Iran in past decades. Now, according to unions, truck drivers nationwide have gone on strike.
(dpa) In Iran, truck drivers have been on strike for the fifth consecutive day, according to activists. The protests are directed against
high spare part prices and fuel costs, excessive insurance premiums, and low freight charges, as reported by Iranian unions on Telegram. Unconfirmed reports suggest the strike has already reached more than 70 cities.
On Sunday, parliament addressed the situation of the drivers, as
reported by the Iranian news portal Emtedad. According to them, the problems have been known for a long time. The government of the conservative-moderate President Massud Peseschkian has so far not publicly commented on the strike.
Iran is in the midst of a
severe economic crisis, caused in part by harsh international sanctions and mismanagement. Recently, there have been increasing power outages in the metropolises. In recent years, several waves of protest have shaken the country. The security forces have responded each time with extreme severity.
