On State Road 2584 at the Hallbergmoos interchange west of Munich Airport, the Freising State Building Authority has erected a photovoltaic canopy. The installation was officially commissioned on 25 August 2025 by Bavaria's Minister-President Markus Söder and Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter, according to the Building Authority.
Technical specifications
The canopy spans a length of 35 meters and covers all traffic lanes. Approximately 1,100 square meters of solar modules were mounted on
the roof, supplemented by a further 135 square meters on the south facade. According to the Building Authority, the installed capacity is just under 210 kilowatt-peak. The modules consist of transparent glass to spare road users the impression of a tunnel.
Energy generation and use
The facility is expected to generate about 210,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, according to the Freising State Building Authority. This can cover the average annual
consumption of around 70 households. In addition, this results in a saving of more than 115 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. The generated electricity will, according to the Building Authority, be fed into the network of Freising's municipal utilities as well as directly used for emergency-call pillars, traffic-counting systems, and the road's control technology.
Costs and construction period
The construction of the photovoltaic canopy began in September 2024 and required
investments of around 4.2 million euros. The project was carried out entirely by the Freising State Building Authority.
Project objectives
With the pilot project, the Freising State Building Authority aims, according to its own statements, to gain technical, economic, and design-related experience in the use of road space for solar power production. The results are intended to provide a basis for future projects and support the implementation of the Bavarian Climate
