IDS Logistik has fully migrated the calculation of the Carbon Footprint (CFP) and thus of the CO2 footprint to the current standard ISO 14083. Since July 15, 2024, emission determination has been based on the EcoTransIT World software, which is regarded as the market standard for transport emission calculations. With this, the general cargo cooperative aims to strengthen the transparency, accuracy and future-readiness of its CO₂ accounting, according to its own statements. This was described as a central building block toward achieving its own climate goals.
Net-Zero Emission Targets
IDS had already in 2024 communicated the reduction targets on the path toward climate neutrality. Thus the transport- and handling-related emissions, calculated as a percentage relative to the base year
2023 per tonne-kilometre, are to be significantly reduced.
It is planned to reduce these by 21 percent by 2030 and by 60 percent by 2040. By no later than 2050, the goal of net-zero emissions is to be achieved. The basis for this is a robust, standardized emission calculation at the shipment level, automated and standards-compliant.
Automated Calculation with EcoTransIT World and REff Tool
Since the go-live of the new calculation methodology, IDS states that the fully automated calculation of transport and handling emissions for all national general cargo shipments in its own network runs every night. All segments of the transport chain, including pre-, main- and post-haul as well as all transshipments, are taken into account. The calculation
is based on the two central components below:
- EcoTransIT World (ETW): An ISO 14083-certified tool for determining transport emissions. Both primary data and thus concrete transport data are used, as well as default values and thus statistical averages.
- REff Tool of the Fraunhofer Institute: It serves the calculation of transshipment emissions taking into account the actual energy consumption of the IDS terminals.
Full Transparency Retroactive to 2023
As the year 2023 was defined as the reference base for the emissions targets, all shipments have been retrospectively assessed according to the new methodology, according to the general cargo cooperative. The results for 2023 and 2024 are now available and will serve as reference values for the long-term monitoring of the
CO₂ reduction targets.
The aim is to continuously improve the CFP calculation. In doing so, the default values should be replaced progressively by primary data such as vehicle type, drive type or utilization, so that the effects of measures such as the first BEV Hubs main runs, which were to start in 2025, are reflected in the CFP calculation.
Additionally, work is underway to incorporate events such as second delivery or forwarding of a shipment into the calculation. IDS Managing Director Michael Bargl:
„For only what is measured can be managed. The daily norm-compliant CFP measurement is the basis of our climate strategy through 2050. With it, we set a standard for transparency and reliability in general cargo logistics.”
