DB Cargo AG and the city of Regensburg have agreed on a new solution for the establishment of a container depot in the eastern part of the city. Instead of the originally planned site in the eastern industrial area, the new depot will now be built on the current site of Transa Spedition GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of DB Cargo, at the Regensburg Ostbahnhof, according to a press release from Deutsche Bahn dated July 17.
Transa Spedition GmbH will cease its operations at the Ostbahnhof as of September 30, 2025. However, it will continue to be present on site with a sales representative. Multimodal transport and storage services for the region can still be offered via Transa at the modern Railport Nuremberg.
DB Cargo will subsequently further develop
the area as a new container depot. Parts of the site are already being used for the storage of empty containers. The immediate proximity to the terminal and the public rail infrastructure allows for a swift commissioning following the necessary approvals, according to Deutsche Bahn.
The decision, according to the company, is an important milestone for the development of Regensburg as a freight transport location. The goal is to consolidate several outdoor areas into a central depot and thereby reduce the traffic burden in the surrounding city districts. The future depot will be used for the storage, maintenance, repair, and management of containers – directly connected to the transshipment terminal operated by DB subsidiary Duss.
“Container depots are crucial for international rail freight traffic,” said Dr. Sigrid Nikutta, Head
of Freight Transport at Deutsche Bahn AG and CEO of DB Cargo AG. “The Transa site offers ideal conditions for the fast and economical implementation of the project due to its location at the Ostbahnhof transport hub.”
In addition, this area enables a faster and more cost-effective implementation of the project.
“We have therefore jointly decided with the city of Regensburg to prioritize this option,” said Nikutta.
With the new container depot, they could continue to offer their customers in the region a reliable rail connection in the future.
“With the decision now announced by DB Cargo AG, good solutions and perspectives are opening up for the Regensburg economic location in two ways: firstly, the Transa site as a future location for the container depot will experience an attractive
reuse for the benefit of the shipping economy in our region,” said Mayor Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer. “Secondly, the city has rightly set up the planning independently of specific projects and has designated a high-quality and attractive industrial area of approximately 120,000 square meters with excellent access via road and rail over development plan No. 215-I at the Ostbahnhof.”
The development plan and building rights thus remain in place, which was recently confirmed by the Administrative Court of Munich in the dismissed normative control lawsuit.
