Lidl is investing in local supply in the greater Stuttgart area: At the groundbreaking ceremony with the mayor of the city of Kirchheim unter Teck, Dr. Pascal Bader, as well as further representatives from Lidl in Germany as well as from politics and business, the official starting signal for the redevelopment of the existing logistics site on Hegelstraße in Kirchheim unter Teck was given, according to a Lidl press release dated October 8.
By mid-2029 Lidl will fully modernize the administration and goods distribution center and expand the storage area to around 52,000 square meters. The centerpiece of the project is an entirely automated order-picking system for the dry goods. It is intended to ensure efficient and smooth
processes and to make the best possible use of the existing space. The technology is also intended to enable a modern and future-oriented way of working for the employees. The modernized logistics site will almost double its capacity and will be able to supply 140 stores instead of 80 in the future.
“With the redevelopment and modernization in Kirchheim unter Teck, we deliberately rely on sustainable development of the existing portfolio and forego the use of new areas,” explains Philipp Dedorath, Head of Construction at Lidl Immobilien Dienstleistung GmbH & Co. KG.
Intelligent IT systems will control all warehouse processes and improve the flow of goods for efficient picking. The full automation of the dry goods assortment, consisting
of long shelf-life products such as pasta, canned goods and spices, is described in the press release as a response to changing wishes and needs of customers. The automation not only ensures fast and precise provisioning of Lidl's extensive assortment for the stores in the region, but also makes a substantial contribution to increasing the logistic capacities.
For the redevelopment, the supply of the dry goods has been predominantly from an external warehouse in Ebersbach an der Fils since February 2025. In total, 125 employees work at the site. Refrigerated products will continue to be delivered directly from Kirchheim – ensuring uninterrupted supply for all stores.
The building will be constructed, according to Lidl, in an environmentally friendly
manner and equipped with energy-efficient building technology. To avoid occupying a larger, previously undeveloped area, the site will grow slightly in height. In addition, a large-scale photovoltaic system on the roofs is planned to generate climate-friendly electricity. Additionally, 16,000 square meters of roof greenery with regionally native species as well as flowering meadows will be created – a habitat for insects and beneficial insects. Rainwater will be retained on the site.
For the building technology, natural refrigerants are used. Heat supply is provided via waste heat utilization of the cooling system with a heat-pump function. LED lighting with presence detectors further reduces energy consumption. Lidl aims for internationally recognized sustainability certifications (EDGE and the German Sustainable Building Council)
