In the Dutch municipality of Aalsmeer, about 13 kilometers southwest of Amsterdam, TGW Logistics is building a highly automated distribution center for Bausch + Lomb by autumn 2027. The Austrian intralogistics provider announced this in a press release. The healthcare specialist Bausch + Lomb is to benefit from a goods-to-person solution that, according to the company, enables an improved service level at reduced logistics costs. In addition, the new facility should optimize the ergonomic workflows for the company's

employees.

As the intralogistics system currently in use increasingly hit its performance limits, the ophthalmic pharmaceutical supplier was looking for a future-proof replacement. Bausch + Lomb intends to meet the planned growth in the coming years with a facility tailored to its own individual needs, according to the company. Given its portfolio in the medical-technology sector, the project’s quality requirements are particularly high, TGW says.

The core of the solution in Aalsmeer, according to the provider, is a shuttle system with more than 150,000 storage locations. Thanks to double-deep storage, the available space

could be used efficiently – 300 robots can store up to 8,700 containers per hour in and out. Customer orders are picked at ergonomic high-performance workstations.

Robotics in Packaging

In packaging, robots handle the automatic erecting and capping of the cartons. A height reducer optimizes them to the required height: thus the volume—and hence the shipping costs—can be kept down. The shuttle, according to TGW, serves to buffer orders before the cartons are automatically palletized and subsequently sent
