Alpha Trains has placed an order with Siemens Mobility for 15 additional Vectron Dual Mode locomotives (VDM) as part of the framework agreement signed in July 2024.The new locomotives are intended for use in Germany and Austria and will augment the existing Alpha Trains fleet of Vectron AC, MS and Vectron Dual Mode models.

With a maximum axle power of 2.4 MW in electric operation and two MW in diesel operation, the ordered locomotives can perform freight-traffic services at speeds of

up to 160 kilometers per hour.

The production of the locomotives takes place at the Siemens Mobility plant in Munich-Allach. Vincent Pouyet, Head of the Locomotives business unit at Alpha Trains:

„The decision to expand our Vectron fleet again is a consistent step toward the future. Our customers are looking for intelligent and sustainable solutions – and that is exactly what dual-mode locomotives offer. They enable the necessary operational flexibility on a variety of routes and significantly reduce emissions by replacing

diesel engines of earlier generations with modern, more environmentally friendly technology.“

Sustainable rail transport

A service agreement signed in 2023 between the two companies also covers the maintenance of the newly ordered Vectron locomotives.

The Vectron Dual Mode locomotive combines the advantages of a diesel locomotive with those of an electric locomotive, according to the companies. Because it can operate on both electrified and non-electrified track sections, this reduces operational effort and increases efficiency. This avoids locomotive changes and contributes to

promoting a more sustainable rail transport.

Andre Rodenbeck, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility:

„We are very pleased that Alpha Trains is once again choosing Siemens Mobility and has ordered 15 more Vectron Dual Mode locomotives. The Vectron Dual Mode, with its modular design and flexibility on electrified and non-electrified routes, is an ideal addition to Alpha Trains' fleet. With more than 2,800 Vectron locomotives sold to date, the trust of our customers in the performance of the Vectron is clearly
