The Ministry of Transport of Baden-Württemberg has launched a call for tenders for the establishment of a basic charging network for battery-electric trucks. Under the funding program "Basic Charging Network for Public Charging of E-Trucks in the Regional Road Network," at least 80 new charging points are to be created at 21 locations in the state in the coming years. The planned charging stations are intended for public access and are expected to supply electricity to more than 1,000 electric trucks daily.
Transport Minister Winfried Hermann emphasizes the importance of emission-free trucks and the charging infrastructure: "The state sets the impulse that providers can use. Only with broad support from the economy can the climate protection goal be
achieved. The electrification of the truck fleet in the country is a high priority – their contribution to carbon dioxide emissions is enormous. Although trucks make up less than 2 percent of the vehicles on European roads, they are responsible for about a third of carbon dioxide emissions. With BASE, we are promoting a nationwide basic charging network for e-trucks."
Goal: Climate-neutral goods transport by 2030
The measure is part of the climate strategy of the state's Ministry of Transport, which aims to make half of freight transport climate-neutral by 2030. A particular focus is on the conversion of road freight transport to vehicles with alternative drives. The tendering process now underway is intended to support the electrification
of heavy commercial vehicles and thus contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
Structure of the funding process
The funding is provided through a competitive process divided into three lots. Each lot comprises seven geographically defined search areas. Within these areas, a location for charging infrastructure is to be established. Each location is planned to have at least four charging points with fast-charging technology according to the Combined Charging System standard. The charging facilities must be operated with electricity from renewable sources, either from the public grid or through on-site generated renewable energy.
Financial support and application
Per lot, a company or a consortium of bidders can receive the award. The maximum funding per lot amounts to
up to four million euros. Thus, a total of three companies or consortia can receive financial support. Applications are submitted via the L-Bank's website. Detailed information on the funding criteria is provided online by the Ministry of Transport of Baden-Württemberg.
Support for freight forwarders and logistics companies
The state of Baden-Württemberg has been supporting the transition to emission-free commercial vehicles and the expansion of operational charging infrastructure since the end of 2024. With two existing funding programs, the ministry supports companies in the freight transport sector in acquiring electrically powered trucks and setting up corresponding charging facilities. The TruckCharge@BW program remains open for applications and is intended to contribute particularly to compliance with European climate protection regulations. (av)
