The DHL Group has opened its new Europe Innovation Center in Troisdorf near Bonn. It aims to actively shape the future of logistics through "visionary, customer-oriented innovations," according to the group. The new, expanded and modernized center near the corporate headquarters replaces the previous facility and is intended to support the development and practical application of technologies that make supply chains more intelligent, sustainable and resilient.
It also serves as a platform for collaboration with customers, startups, scientific institutions and industry partners. Spanning an area of 5,360 square meters, the center showcases DHL's latest advances – including artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, Internet of Things (IoT) and technologies to promote sustainability – and is a central building block of DHL Group Strategy 2030. This roadmap focuses on intelligent growth, emissions-reduced logistics and digital transformation, with the Innovation Center acting as a catalyst for forward-looking logistics solutions.
"The new DHL Europe Innovation Center enables collaboration, fosters growth and redefines the possibilities in logistics – by turning ideas into reality," says Katja Busch, Chief Commercial Officer DHL and Head of DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation.
Built from glulam and powered by
renewable energy, the new center operates without greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and is intended to stand as an example of the group's holistic sustainability approach. The environmental impact has been reduced across all areas, from the selection of natural materials to intelligent energy systems to low-emission construction, and is in line with the DGNB Platinum certification, one of the highest sustainability standards for green buildings in Europe.
The center accommodates up to 400 visitors and features a flexible, modular spatial concept that can be easily adapted to various events and workshops, thus promoting dynamic collaboration and innovation. It also serves as home to the DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation Team, which, together with other teams, is expected to play a key role in implementing the group's global innovation agenda.
Key trends addressed
The technologies presented in the Innovation Center align with the key trends identified in the DHL Logistics Trend Radar – a strategic instrument that helps customers and the logistics industry anticipate changes in the sector over the next ten years. To understand how these trends are prioritized, the logistics company conducted a worldwide survey of more
than 2,500 supply-chain experts from various industries and regions. The results show that AI, robotics and Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) are the three most important trend clusters that will shape supply chains in the coming years:
- AI was named by 44% of respondents as the most important driver of the future transformation of logistics.
- Robotics ranked second with 28% and is valued especially for efficiency gains and automation.
- ESG followed with 25% and reflects the growing importance of sustainability in supply chains.
"Our customers want solutions that are not only technologically advanced but also sustainable and scalable," says Katja Busch. "The DHL Europe Innovation Center brings this shared vision to life through key technologies such as AI-based solutions, autonomous robotics, and environmentally friendly packaging innovations."
From the vision to operational impact
The logistics group develops and tests not only new technologies, but also implements them at scale in its global operations. A driver of this transformation is DHL Supply Chain, the contract logistics arm of the group, which plays a key role in scaling innovations across the company. Through a structured approach – consisting of modular standardization,
strategic partnerships and intelligent logistics platforms – DHL Supply Chain has successfully introduced technologies such as collaborative robots, AI-powered analytics and autonomous transport systems at its logistics sites, the logistics company notes. To date, it has globally implemented nearly 10,000 automation and digitization projects and integrated over 8,000 collaborative robots into operations.
"From automation, robotics and IoT sensing to data analytics and AI – intelligent technologies are embedded in all of our operational processes worldwide. We are convinced that innovation only unleashes its full potential when it is implemented at scale," says Rainer Haag, CEO of DHL Supply Chain Europe.
As a global flagship, the new center in Germany is part of DHL's worldwide network of innovation centers, which also includes locations in the Americas (Chicago), Asia-Pacific (Singapore) and the Middle East and Africa (Dubai). Collectively, these centers form a connected ecosystem that aims to enable the group to identify emerging trends, engage in dialogue with customers, test new technologies and scale solutions across regions and business units. By promoting collaboration across geographic and industry boundaries, we ensure that innovation is not only locally relevant but also globally
