Greencarrier Consolidators unveiled in early 2025 the concept "Shipping Made Fossil Free," which is intended to allow customers to test biofuel inserts for any shipments at no cost.
Fuel Switch Routes
Now it aims to accelerate the transition to fossil-free shipping and is taking a further step with the so-called Fuel Switch Routes, which connect Shanghai with the ports of Gothenburg and Hamburg.
Through the Greencarrier Blue initiative, maritime biofuel inserts would automatically be applied to every import shipment on these routes. The program would be fully financed by Greencarrier, according to the information provided. It
should enable customers to reduce transport-related CO₂ emissions without changes to the booking process or additional costs.
„We want to pursue a proactive approach to accelerate the transition to fossil-free shipping,“ says Tim Jurischka, CEO of Greencarrier Consolidators. He adds: „We do this by enabling our customers to include the use of biofuel inserts on these important import routes and to work together to reduce emissions – without additional complexity or extra costs.“
Book-and-Claim System
How exactly does all this work? For each shipment, Greencarrier issues a verified amount of maritime biofuel inserts via a certified
Book-and-Claim system and withdraws these from the system.
The maritime biofuel used for Greencarrier's inserts is produced from sustainable feedstocks, primarily agricultural by-products, and after processing and certification is fed into the maritime fuel system.
The Book-and-Claim system is intended to ensure that the associated CO₂ reductions are traceable, verifiable by third parties and transparently documented — even if the biofuel is not physically used on the ship that carries out the specific transport.
Fossil-Free Shipping Routes
According to Patrik Westraeus, Head of Sustainability at Greencarrier, the aim with the Fuel Switch Routes is to show
that fossil-free shipping can be simple, scalable and effective, and that the industry can take responsibility for its CO₂ footprint.
„Even more important is that we can now show that sustainability is an integral part of our logistics offering – not an optional extra or premium product. It must be integrated into every shipment and into daily logistics operations,“ emphasizes Westraeus.
According to the transport volumes on these routes, Greencarrier Consolidators reportedly expects an initial average CO₂ reduction of five percent per month. The concept is scalable and adaptable and could be expanded to additional routes.
