Eleven of the new trainees will complete their training as warehouse logistics specialists. Three will be trained as electronics technicians and another three as industrial mechanics. Additionally, three young people have started their training as office management clerks and another as a professional for security and safety. Claudia Wawerzinek, the in-house trainer for the aspiring business professionals and logisticians at Hermes Fulfilment in Haldensleben, is pleased to welcome more trainees this year than in the past:
“The positive response shows that Hermes Fulfilment enjoys an excellent reputation as a training company among students. We strive to lay the foundation for a successful career in a future-oriented industry with our training.”
Shipping Processes for Otto Group
Since 1994, the location has been a logistical hub for trading companies within the Otto Group. The Haldensleben shipping center, with its two
facilities on Hamburger Street and in the nearby Südhafen, specializes in handling the small-volume assortment, which includes clothing and shoes.
With modern technology, robotics, and AI, Hermes Fulfilment takes care of warehousing, packs parcels and bags with items ordered online, manages shipping to more than 20 European countries, and restocks items returned due to dissatisfaction.
At Hermes Fulfilment in Haldensleben, around 4,000 employees are employed. A total of 344 young people have been trained in various professions since 1996, according to their own information. However, the growing shortage of skilled workers is also making its presence felt at the Hermes Fulfilment shipping center. Wawerzinek:
“That's why it is even more crucial to train for our own needs and to bind tomorrow's qualified specialists to the company today.”
Successful Project for Attracting Trainees
Regularly, training fairs in the region
are attended to inform about various training professions and prospects at the Haldensleben shipping center. Additionally, lectures are held in schools, collaborations with educational institutions are maintained, and there is close contact with the Employment Agency and the IHK Magdeburg.
The project “HF macht Schule” has proven particularly successful in recruiting trainees. Once a year, students from all ninth-grade classes in Haldensleben are invited to the shipping center. There, they exchange ideas with trainees, get to know the different areas during a tour, get a look into the high-bay warehouse, and participate in activities such as packing in the automatic return warehouse, shipping, or goods dispatch. Wawerzinek:
“With the help of this project, we recruit most of our trainees.”
Own Training Workshop for Drilling and Milling
The high esteem of training at Hermes Fulfilment is also evident in
the in-house training workshop. There, the aspiring electronics technicians and industrial mechanics familiarize themselves with technical skills such as turning, drilling, milling, or grinding during a twelve-month basic training before being deployed in various areas of the shipping center.
In addition, electronic tasks like building controls, testing motors, and measuring plant components are included. At the site, maintenance technicians keep the conveyor technology, which can be up to 30 kilometers long, running. Wawerzinek:
“The fact that we, as a logistics service provider, maintain an in-house training workshop is an absolute unique feature.”
Of the approximately 100 employees in house and plant engineering, a good fifth were trained in-house. And generally, the chance of being hired is high. Wawerzinek:
“After successfully completing their training, our trainees can choose their area of deployment. And usually, they get placed there too.”
