The Servotwin system is used in vehicles with a high front axle load and offers both technical and functional advancements. Like its predecessor, it is based on a dual-circuit steering system with separate hydraulic and electric power supply, according to the manufacturer. Additionally, it combines the steering torque applied by the driver with an electronically controlled auxiliary steering torque for steering precision and fine-tuned control.
Better Steering Precision and Straight-Line Stability
According to Mercedes-Benz Trucks, steering precision has also been improved. This is intended to ensure smoother and safer driving
behavior, especially at higher speeds. At the same time, the steering torque can now be dosed even more finely, further enhancing vehicle control in all driving situations.
An active steering wheel return automatically brings the steering wheel back to the center position after cornering. This is designed to relieve the driver and improve driving comfort, particularly in urban and distribution traffic.
A new additional function further influences the steering behavior. The driver can now choose between three modes via the driver's instrument, which differ in their steering power assistance and
active return behavior at speeds below 30 kilometers per hour. This allows the steering behavior to be individually adjusted.
According to the manufacturer, straight-line stability has also been improved, as the vehicle remains more stable in its lane at higher speeds and reacts less sensitively to grooves. This is particularly helpful for long-distance use.
Elimination of the Buffer Battery
When maneuvering at a standstill, the vehicle should be easy to steer with minimal effort due to the combination of hydraulic power assistance and an integrated electric motor, even at low
speeds or when stationary.
At the same time, the play-free center position of the steering ensures a direct and controlled steering feel, according to Mercedes-Benz Trucks. The control unit automatically adjusts the steering power assistance to the driving situation, ensuring good steering behavior at both low and high speeds.
With the elimination of the previously necessary buffer battery, maintenance costs and the regular replacement, which was previously required approximately every three years, are eliminated according to the manufacturer. This also results in a weight reduction of the overall system compared
