From September 2025, Austrian Post AG will offer a new payment method in e-commerce with "PostPay". After a test phase on the company's own online marketplace shoepping.at, the solution will be available to all online shops. According to Austrian Post, the payment option allows cash payment directly upon package delivery or collection, among other things. The aim is to separate the payment process from the ordering process and thus make it more flexible.

Payment Process Outside of Checkout

As the company reports, customers do not need to enter payment data or passwords during the ordering process when selecting PostPay. Instead,

payment is made between ordering and delivery. It is possible to transfer the amount after receiving a payment request by email. Alternatively, the amount can be paid at the personal package delivery at the doorstep or when picking up at a post office or post partner.

Procedure in Four Steps

According to Austrian Post, the process is divided into four steps: selecting the "PostPay" payment method in the online shop, handing over the package to Austrian Post, sending the payment request by email, and subsequent payment either online or upon delivery.

Advantages for Retailers and Customers According to Post

Post sees advantages in PostPay for both sides of online retail. Retailers could benefit from higher completion rates due to the simplified payment process. Delivery and payment processing by the same service provider ensures secure receipt of payment before or during package delivery. The payout is automatically made weekly via a clearing account.

According to Post, the offer also targets customers with a high need for security or a preference for cash payment. The omission of direct entry of payment data in the webshop and the option for subsequent payment are intended to reach additional target groups.

Peter Umundum, Deputy

CEO, Head of Parcel & Logistics: "With PostPay, we have developed a modern, secure, and customer-friendly payment option that meets the needs of today's online commerce. Retailers benefit from a higher conversion rate, buyers from maximum flexibility and security."

Returns Processing Through Post

Post also handles returns processing. In the event of a return, the company states that the amount will be automatically refunded. This means that the entire payment process is embedded in the logistical flow.

The new payment option supplements the existing infrastructure of Post and expands its logistical service functions in online commerce according to its own
