DKV Mobility is launching a new toll box with 4G technology. This is in response to the announced shutdown of outdated 2G mobile networks in several European countries, it is said.
For example, Switzerland will introduce a new 4G-based toll system for heavy-duty vehicles with a permissible total weight of over 3.5 tons starting next year. Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Norway have also already announced plans to discontinue their 2G-based toll services by the end of 2030.
Start planned for the end of 2025
The new generation of the DKV Box Europe is set to complement
the EETS offering (European Electronic Toll Service) of the mobility service provider from the fourth quarter of 2025. Jérôme Lejeune, Managing Director Toll & Refund Services at DKV Mobility:

The new DKV Box Europe 4G has a large color display that is intended to enable faster and more intuitive operation. With one click, users get direct access to important submenus,
allowing them to configure axles and weight.
Via Plug & Play, the new box can also be easily replaced with the existing 2G cable. The box operates completely autonomously, and a smartphone is not required, according to DKV Mobility. Equipped with modern technology, it combines DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) to enable seamless toll collection. This is the case regardless of whether the respective country relies on short-range radio or satellite-based systems.
Intelligent Battery Warning System
The box also features a battery warning system that is designed to provide early notification of
low charge levels, ensuring an uninterrupted power supply. Additionally, over-the-air updates are regularly conducted to stay up to date with the latest technology and to automatically integrate new functions.
The DKV Box Europe currently covers 18 toll services in 15 European countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Hungary. Additionally, the on-board unit covers the following bridges and tunnels: the Warnow Tunnel and Herrentunnel in Germany, the Liefkenshoek Tunnel in Belgium, and the Scandinavian bridges. In the fall, the toll service of the Czech Republic is also to be included.
