The cooling unit manufacturer Thermo King has expanded the compatibility of its cooling machines for diesel trucks to the biofuel B100 FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) in accordance with EN 14214. This means the devices can in the future be operated with 100 percent biofuel without adjustments to maintenance intervals or warranty conditions. The certification is part of the company's sustainability strategy, which belongs to the Trane Technologies group.
B100 biofuel from rapeseed oil vs. HVO diesel
The B100 biofuel, which is often produced from rapeseed oil, reduces greenhouse gas emissions over the entire lifecycle by
up to 60 percent, according to Thermo King. Particulate matter emissions could be reduced by up to 78 percent. In total, up to 50 tons of CO₂-equivalent could be saved per machine. The prerequisite is that the fuel used complies with the European EN 14214 standard and that the cooling unit has been prepared for this use.
In 2021 Thermo King had already approved its engines for use with HVO diesel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). HVO100 is a synthetic diesel fuel made from hydrotreated vegetable oils. It is produced from biogenic residual and waste materials such as
used cooking oils and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional diesel by up to 90 percent.
With the additional certification for B100, the manufacturer is now expanding the choice of alternative, renewable fuels. The aim is to advance decarbonization in the transport sector and to offer operators of non-electrified fleets more sustainable options, according to the company.
Factory-installed B100 option for the new Thermo King TX series
A factory-installed B100 option is now available for all new models of the TX series. According to Thermo King, the performance of the devices remains fully intact,
while emissions are reduced significantly.
With the new TX series, Thermo King is modernizing its truck refrigeration portfolio and replacing the previous T series. The models cover fresh and frozen transport, are designed for single- and multi-compartment applications and offer, according to the manufacturer, up to 17 percent more cooling capacity, 7 percent better fuel efficiency and up to 40 kilograms less weight.
