The Metzger Spedition GmbH (Metzger Logistics & Freight Forwarding) is advancing its sustainability goals. By the end of July 2025, the company has transitioned its entire vehicle fleet to the Webfleet telematics solution. The system is also integrated into the three Volvo FH Electric trucks used in regular operations, providing special functions for electric trucks such as charging planning, real-time range display, and proactive scheduling.

This aims to better manage routes, integrate charging times into the daily schedule, and avoid empty runs. For the combustion vehicles, which have been powered by the low-CO₂ fuel HVO100 derived from hydrogenated vegetable oils since the end of 2024, Webfleet records the exact emission output. This data feeds into a sustainability report and documents

the progress of the company's "Charge the Future" strategy.

Metzger Logistics & Freight Forwarding builds its own charging park for electric trucks

In addition to digital solutions, Metzger has built its own charging park for electric trucks at the Neu-Kupfer location since 2024. Four publicly accessible Kempower fast charging stations with a power of 240 kilowatts and a boost function up to 400 kilowatts enable both the charging of their own fleet and use by other companies or private electric vehicles. This secures the charging infrastructure for the planned expansion of electric truck capacities.

Currently, the inventory includes three electric Volvos, and in the next three years, six more battery-electric vehicles are to be added. By 2030, the company plans

to convert at least half of its fleet to electric propulsion.

In practical testing: Alongside Volvo FH Electric, also Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 and MAN eTGX

Practical tests of new models are a firm part of Metzger's strategy on this path. Between spring and summer 2025, Metzger tested three newly available electric trucks – two Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 and one MAN eTGX – in everyday freight forwarding operations. Over several weeks, the vehicles covered about 5,000 kilometers with a total train weight of 40 tons.

The tests apparently showed practical ranges of 400 to 500 kilometers per charge, quiet driving behavior, high driving comfort, and easy operation of the digital driver cabins. After a short acclimatization, the regenerative brake also proved

advantageous for energy-efficient driving. Managing Director Johannes Metzger emphasizes the benefits of such deployments: They provide comparative values for future purchases and ensure that technology, range, and comfort meet the demands of daily transport operations.

Conclusion & Outlook

With the combination of advanced telematics, its own charging infrastructure, a growing electric truck fleet, and CO₂-optimized operation of combustion vehicles, Metzger Logistics & Freight Forwarding is currently among the pioneers in implementing sustainable transport solutions in the heavy-duty segment. The holistic approach involving investments in charging infrastructure, comparative tests of modern electric trucks, and the introduction of digital measures for efficiency enhancement and optimized consumption and emissions reporting is noteworthy. Also noteworthy is the practical approach to achieving rapid emission reductions
