FedEx Express Swiss Post has, after around a year of construction, commenced operations of a new site in Gossau in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. The facility replaces the previous locations in Wängi and Münchwilen and consolidates their operational and administrative tasks at a single site. The joint venture of FedEx Express and the Swiss Post thus expands its logistics infrastructure in Eastern Switzerland and in the Principality of Liechtenstein.
According to the express service provider, at the roughly 14,500-square-meter site 35 employees and about ten couriers from partner companies work. The parcel hall measures about 3,600 square
meters, with an additional 400 square meters of office space. With three truck-loading ramps and 40 loading ramps for delivery vehicles, the site is designed for regional delivery and pickup processes.
Increased sorting capacity and energy efficiency
The sorting capacity is, according to FedEx Express Swiss Post, more than 30 percent above the previous level of the consolidated facilities. The new building was designed to enable a fast and efficient turnover of shipments. On the roof surfaces, a photovoltaic system with an area of around 3,400 square meters and a rated output of 730.8 kilowatt-hours was installed. Inside, there is
charging infrastructure for electrically powered delivery vehicles. Part of the excavated material generated during construction was recycled and reused for the foundation.
“Our aim is to support our customers in expanding their businesses and to provide them with an optimal service experience,” says Stefan Dries, Vice President, Ground Operations for Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Benelux at FedEx. “The new site fully meets the growing demands for modern transportation services.”
Part of a cross-regional site strategy
With the new build in Gossau, the company continues to expand its network in Switzerland. Already in autumn 2023, a new site in Dällikon in
the canton of Zürich had been opened. The investment in Gossau is intended to serve the growing demand in e-commerce and to further secure the service quality in the region, it says.
Service offering for international shipments
From Gossau, FedEx Express Swiss Post offers a broad portfolio of time-definite transport services. These include, according to company information, overnight deliveries to the United States, deliveries to more than 50,000 postal code areas in Europe, as well as door-to-door transports within Switzerland. The new site is intended to stabilize and expand the logistics processes in these areas over the long term. (av)
