Hiller Logistik GmbH has commissioned Jungheinrich to implement a highly automated narrow-aisle warehouse at the Lüneburg site. With the investment, the logistics service provider responds to rising requirements for efficiency and availability as well as to particularly stringent fire protection requirements.

The core of the system are four automated narrow-aisle forklifts of the EKX 516a type. As so-called Mobile Robots, they take over the inbound and outbound processes. They operate in ten storage aisles, each 67 meters long and 12.9 meters high. This enables the system to achieve a high storage density on a compact footprint.

Euro-, industrial- and CP-pallets as well as boxes in the warehouse

The warehouse is designed for various load carrier types, including Euro-, industrial- and CP-pallets as well as boxes. The supply of the storage aisles is via a conveying system with integrated contour-check stations to control pallet dimensions. A transfer car handles the handover between the conveying system and the

rack-handling devices.

For energy-efficient continuous operation, a combined supply system consisting of automatic PzS battery charging and a power rail ensures operation five days per week with 16 hours of runtime each.

Integrated automation with rack system, conveying technology and Warehouse Control System

Jungheinrich acts as general contractor for the project and delivers a fully integrated automation solution. In addition to the four EKX 516a, the scope of supply includes the entire racking system, the conveying technology with inspection units, the Warehouse Control System (WCS) and the Process Visualization (PMI). Through this holistic implementation, a seamless coordination of all system components is to be ensured.

The automation solution is intended not only to contribute to increased process efficiency but also to relieve personnel, as manual tasks are reduced. At the same time, the facility meets particularly high fire protection requirements that had to be implemented at the Lüneburg site due to legal requirements.

The integration with

Hiller Logistik's existing IT infrastructure is realized via Jungheinrich WCS, which ensures seamless integration of the automation components. Commissioning of the new warehouse is planned for 2026.

Background: Jungheinrich Warehouse Control System (WCS)

The Warehouse Control System (WCS) from Jungheinrich is one of the modern control solutions for complex automated warehouses. It controls internal material flow and aims at holistic optimization of processes. Among its functions are, among others, the management of transport orders, the selection of suitable storage locations as well as the organization of load-handling equipment. By using intelligent, process-oriented algorithms, efficiency reserves are unlocked in the warehouse and the delivery readiness is increased. The WCS ensures that goods reach the target position via integrated conveying components such as conveyors, rack-handling devices, or autonomous guided vehicles in the required quantity and at the intended time. The system is complemented by Jungheinrich's Warehouse Management System (WMS), which handles stock management and controls, monitors and optimizes

all intralogistic processes.

Background: Hiller Hazardous Goods Warehouse in Lüneburg

Hiller Logistik is currently constructing a modern hazardous goods warehouse in Lüneburg. On around 4,900 square meters of hall space, a fully automated high-bay warehouse with a storage capacity of over 10,000 Euro pallets is being built. The racking system reaches a height of 15.1 meters and offers differentiated storage areas for hazardous material classes in accordance with legal requirements, including the particularly demanding substances in classes 3, 5.1, 6.1 and 8.

The safety concept comprises separate storage zones, comprehensive access controls, fire alarm systems, standpipe sprinkler systems and a CO₂ suppression system. For a stable room climate, underfloor heating, modern ventilation technology and intelligent temperature control ensure it. The logistics processes are digitally controlled and safeguarded by automated systems. A photovoltaic system with a capacity of over 250 kilowatts supplies the building services with renewable energy. Commissioning is planned for 2026. (Source: Jungheinrich, own research)
