The DHL Group has introduced at its German mail and parcel locations a self-developed charging and load management system tailored specifically to the requirements of large e-vehicle fleets. The solution arose in collaboration with the DHL subsidiary StreetScooter GmbH and the engineering partner IAV. After successful testing in a pilot project with 600 electric vehicles, the rollout to the entire corporate division Post & Paket Deutschland (P&P) is now complete. In total, more than 35,000 electric vehicles are now in operation with the new system, according to the company.

The aim of the development was to create an intelligently controlled energy management system that not only ensures stable and efficient

charging of the vehicles, but also combines operational, energy-related and economic advantages. By avoiding unnecessary peak loads and optimizing the control of energy flows, the system reduces electricity costs.

It also utilizes locally generated energy from photovoltaic installations, simplifies the integration of stationary battery storage and heat pumps, and thereby enables a holistic optimization of energy use at the operating sites.

Ladezustand und Einsatzplanung bestimmen fahrzeugspezifische Ladepläne

State of charge and deployment planning determine vehicle-specific charging plans.

Eine zentralen Element des Systems ist ein algorithmengestützter Optimierer, der auf Basis des Ladezustands, der Einsatzplanung und weiterer Einflussfaktoren fahrzeugspezifische 24-Stunden-Ladepläne erstellt. Dabei werden externe Bedingungen wie die Außentemperatur oder Vorkonditionierung des Fahrzeuginnenraums in Echtzeit berücksichtigt und die Pläne fortlaufend angepasst. Diese dynamische Steuerung gewährleistet eine hohe Energieeffizienz und Betriebssicherheit – auch bei

saisonal schwankenden Anforderungen.

A central element of the system is an algorithm-driven optimizer that, based on the state of charge, deployment planning and other influencing factors, creates 24-hour charging plans that are vehicle-specific. External conditions such as ambient temperature or pre-conditioning of the vehicle interior are taken into account in real time, and the plans are continuously adjusted. This dynamic control ensures high energy efficiency and operational reliability – even under seasonally fluctuating requirements.

Transparenz über Energieverbrauch, Ladevorgänge, Auslastung und Fehler

Transparency into energy consumption, charging operations, utilization and faults.

The connection is made via backend interfaces or directly via vehicle connectivity. The data obtained can be integrated into external monitoring and analysis systems via defined interfaces. Thus, comprehensive transparency about energy consumption, charging operations, infrastructure utilization and fault sources

is created. This facilitates deployment planning, enables targeted fault analysis, and improves the company's energy management, according to DHL.

Neben dem konzerninternen Einsatz bietet StreetScooter die Lösung ab sofort auch für externe Kunden an. In Kooperation mit IAV soll das System künftig als skalierbares Produkt für andere Flottenbetreiber zugänglich gemacht werden. Laut IAV erfüllt das System aktuelle IT-Sicherheitsstandards und kann flexibel an spezifische Kundenanforderungen angepasst werden.
