According to Bremenports' intensive planning and coordination and the financing secured by the Senate and the Bürgerschaft, the construction of the Nordmole at the Geestemündung can now begin. A corresponding letter is intended to inform immediate residents more closely about the procedure and potential restrictions due to the construction work, it is said.

The new mole is intended, on the one hand, to improve the nautical conditions at the fishing port, and on the other hand to provide citizens as well as visitors to the city with a new, attractive destination on the water, according to the information.

“The Nordmole

is a defining part of Bremerhaven. After a long period of preceding closures and the accident in 2022 along with the subsequent provisional safeguarding measures, it is high time to lead this structure into a stable and modern future,” says Bremenports managing director Robert Howe. He adds: “And what makes us especially happy: at the end of the project, the mole and the tower will shine in completely new splendor—as a traditional yet forward-looking symbol of Bremerhaven's port location.”

Dismantling and New Construction

First comes the dismantling of the remaining remnants of the old Nordmole and the provisional embankment protection

at Weserstrandbad. Then the new mole will be rebuilt in a changed location.

According to the port operator, access to the fishing port will be improved and thus the economic development of the southern fishing port secured.

Two years of construction time planned

In total, around 3,500 tons of steel are to be used. For the filling, around 10,000 cubic meters of sand would be required. Two parallel quay walls with a total length of about 280 meters would form the new foundation.

During the course of the construction, a reinforced concrete superstructure will be erected on it to permanently

secure the structure. For the entire construction period, about two years are planned. The completion is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027.

Project goals

“With the new mole we significantly improve the infrastructure in the fishing port—and at the same time create a place where the people of the city can closely experience Bremerhaven's maritime character,” Howe explains.

According to the information, the project is intended to optimize the harbor's capacity and the safety of the access, ensure the long-term protection of the shore areas—and at the same time create an attractive piece of public infrastructure on the water.
