FedEx Express Swiss Post has, after around a year of construction, put a new site into operation in Gossau in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. The facility replaces the previous sites in Wängi and Münchwilen and brings their operational and administrative tasks together at one location. The joint venture of FedEx Express and the Swiss Post thereby expands its logistics infrastructure in Eastern Switzerland and in the Principality of Liechtenstein.
According to the express delivery service, at the roughly 14,500-square-meter site 35 employees and about ten couriers from partner firms work. The parcel hall measures about
3,600 square meters, in addition there are 400 square meters of office space. With three truck loading ramps and 40 loading ramps for delivery vehicles the site is designed for regional delivery and pickup processes.
Increased sorting capacity and energy efficiency
The sorting performance, according to FedEx Express Swiss Post, is more than 30 percent above the previous level of the merged facilities. The new building has been designed to enable fast and efficient handling of shipments. On the rooftops a photovoltaic system with an area of around 3,400 square meters and a nominal capacity of 730.8 kilowatt-hours
has been installed. Inside, charging infrastructure for electrically powered delivery vehicles is available. Part of the excavated material generated during construction was recycled and reused for the foundation.
„Our aim is to support our customers in expanding their businesses and to provide them with an optimal service experience,“ says Stefan Dries, Vice President Ground Operations Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Benelux at FedEx. „The new site will fully meet the rising demands on modern transport services.“
