Wallenius Sol has been using liquid biogas from the energy company Gasum on its two multi-fuel ships Baltic Enabler and Botnia Enabler since October. The first liquid biogas bunkering operations had already taken place in early October.
This is an important milestone on the company’s own Climate Roadmap and brings clear benefits for customers and the environment, according to the company. The agreement enables the use of renewable fuels and accelerates the transition to renewable energy in maritime transport in the Nordic countries.
Sustainable maritime logistics
Under the terms of the closed agreement, Gasum will supply the
liquid biogas to Wallenius Sol via a pooling arrangement, enabling renewable fuels to be introduced into shipping on a larger scale.
Liquid biogas is produced from organic waste streams and is chemically identical to liquefied natural gas (LNG), so it can be used directly in existing dual-fuel engines without modifications. Rebecca Tagaeus, Chief Sustainability Officer at Wallenius Sol:

By introducing liquid biogas, customers could reduce their Scope-3 emissions, i.e., indirect emissions from logistics and transport. Liquid biogas is also RED II certified and traceable via ISCC. It is produced from Nordic residual streams, ensuring that it does not conflict with food production. Jacob Granqvist, Deputy Chairman for the maritime sector at Gasum:

Liquid biogas offers substantial climate benefits compared with fossil LNG. The combustion emissions are the same, but due to the renewable origin of liquid biogas, the released carbon is part of a short biological cycle and does not come from fossil reserves.
