Performance of Toll Trucks Increases Slightly in December (Update December, Claus Bünnagel)
The increase is 0.5 % compared to the previous month and 3.0 % compared to the same month last year.
The mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on federal highways increased in December compared to November 2024 by approximately 0.5 % calendar- and seasonally adjusted. As reported by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the calendar-adjusted truck-toll mileage index was approximately 3.0 % above the level of the previous year's month, December 2023.
Truck Mileage Provides Clues to Economic Development in Industry
Economic activity generates and requires transport services. Therefore, there is a clear correlation between the truck-toll mileage index and indices of economic activity, particularly in industrial production. Since the truck-toll mileage index is available about a month earlier than the production index, it serves as a leading indicator for economic development. However, a subdivision by industry sectors is not possible.
Daily Values for the Truck-Toll Mileage Index Available in "Economic Pulse"
In addition to the monthly index, an experimental daily truck-toll mileage index for Germany is published. The daily values are part of the set of indicators of the "Economic Pulse" in the Germany Dashboard (www.dashboard-deutschland.de). With this tool, various statistics and characteristics can be conveniently compared in a graphic. The combination of high-frequency indicators thus makes it possible to observe economic development almost in real time.
More Information
The monthly results for the truck-toll mileage index are accessible in the Genesis-Online database via tables 42191-0001 (Germany), 42191-0010 (federal states) and 42191-0002 (cross-border trips) as well as on the thematic page "Economic Indicators" in the online offerings of the Federal Statistical Office.
As part of the "Toll Statistics," the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility evaluates the toll data. Detailed tables, maintained since 2008, are available under the name "Toll Data Tables" on the BALM's online portal. Changes in the extent of the toll road network as well as the total weight of vehicles and vehicle combinations subject to tolls over time are largely excluded with the truck-toll mileage index, so that economic development becomes more visible.
December 2024
According to the latest available figures for December 2024, the calendar- and seasonally adjusted value according to X13 JDemetra+ is 95.7%. Compared to the previous month, November 2024, which was at 95.2%, there is an increase of 0.5 percentage points. Compared with the previous year's month of December 2023, which was at 92.8%, there is a significant increase of 2.9 percentage points.
November 2024
In October 2024, a calendar- and seasonally adjusted value of 95.7 % was recorded based on data from X13 JDemetra+. Compared to the previous month, September 2024, which had a value of 94.5 %, the value increased in October. A comparison with the previous year shows that the value in October 2023 was 94.2 %, which also indicates an increase in the annual comparison. This development suggests a positive dynamic, as both a monthly and annual increase can be observed.
October 2024
Truck toll mileage increased by just over one percent in October. These data often provide an early indication of the current economic development.
The mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on German highways increased by 1.4 percent in October 2024 compared to the previous month. As reported by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (Balm) together with the Federal Statistical Office, the seasonally adjusted truck-toll mileage index is thus 1.6 percent above the value of October 2023. The authorities emphasize that these data could provide early indications of economic development in the industry.
According to the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility, there is a close relationship between economic activity and transport services:
"Economic activity generates and requires transport services," explains the Balm.
Accordingly, industrial production can be partially inferred from the development of the truck-toll mileage index. Since the index is available about a month before the production index, it serves as a valuable leading indicator. However, a breakdown by specific industries is omitted, so the index only depicts the general traffic situation.
Daily Data and Real-Time Monitoring of Economic Development
In addition to the monthly truck-toll mileage index, an experimental daily version is now published. These daily values are part of the "Economic Pulse", a new overview on the Dashboard Germany portal, which combines various economic indicators graphically and thus enables observation almost in real-time.
Index Based on Toll Data
The truck-toll mileage index is derived from the data collected by the truck toll survey. According to the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility, these are digital process data that can also be used for detailed statistics.
Since 2008, the data has been available in table form under the title "Toll Data Tables" on the Balm's online portal, offering not only seasonally adjusted monthly figures but also differentiated evaluations, for example by origin countries of the trucks or their emission classes.
The monthly results for the truck-toll mileage index and other detailed statistics can be accessed via the Genesis-Online database and the thematic pages of the Federal Statistical Office.

Hint of Economic Slowdown: Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex Falls
Update from 10.11.2023 by Christine Harttmann
In October, the mileage was five percent below that of the previous year. And compared to the previous year, traffic also declined.
On the federal highways in October 2023, the mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles decreased by 1.9 percent compared to September 2023. According to a joint press release from the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the calendar-adjusted Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex was 5.0 percent lower than in the same month of the previous year, October 2022.
Since the Lkw mileage on highways gives early indications of the current economic development in the industry, the current figures can be interpreted as a sign of an economic slowdown. In particular, the production index in manufacturing is strongly correlated with traffic performance.

June 2023: Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex Weakens
Update from 10.07.2023 by Christine Harttmann
The mileage of toll trucks in the German road network continues to decline, as evidenced by the latest figures published by the Federal Statistical Office.
The mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on federal highways decreased in June 2023 compared to May 2023 by 1.4 percent calendar- and seasonally adjusted.
These current data have been published by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The calendar-adjusted Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex was thus 3.3 percent below the value of June 2022. The decline in the Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex indicates a decreased demand in the goods transport sector and is therefore a sign of an economic downturn. The Lkw mileage index provides transport and logistics companies with an important basis for long-term planning and investments in their fleet. A precise understanding of the current market development enables companies to strategically allocate their resources and seize growth opportunities.

BAG: Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex Rises Slightly
Update from 10.11.2022 by Christine Harttmann
Compared to the previous month of September, there were slightly more trucks on the highways again in October. Traffic density increased especially in Baden-Württemberg.
On the federal highways, the mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles increased by 0.7 percent in October 2022 compared to September 2022, calendar- and seasonally adjusted. This is shown by the joint analysis of the Federal Office for Freight Transport (BAG) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Compared to the same month of the previous year, October 2021, the calendar-adjusted Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex remained unchanged. The Lkw mileage on highways provides early indications of the current economic development in the industry, according to a press release from BAG. Therefore, the Lkw mileage index is not only suitable nationwide but also in some federal states as a leading indicator for economic development. Strongest Increase in Baden-WürttembergEspecially in the industrially developed regions, there is a clear correlation between regional Lkw toll mileage and regional sales in manufacturing. Therefore, the mileage in the federal states is regularly analyzed. In October 2022, Baden-Württemberg showed the largest increase in Lkw toll mileage compared to the previous month - by 2.6 percent calendar- and seasonally adjusted. In Rhineland-Palatinate, too, Lkw mileage increased comparatively strongly by 2.2 percent compared to the previous month.
Since April 2022, Lkw toll indices for cross-border trips have also been available. These indices measure the number of entries and exits across the German border. In October 2022, overall cross-border traffic decreased by 0.3 percent calendar- and seasonally adjusted. For cross-border trips to and from France, the strongest decline was recorded at -6.8 percent. The toll mileage index cites the temporary closure of the B500, one of the main crossings to France, due to construction work as a possible important reason. The largest increase was at the Austrian border, with an increase of 2.0 percent calendar- and seasonally adjusted.

As reported by the Federal Office for Freight Transport (BAG) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on federal highways increased in August 2022 by 0.4 percent compared to July 2022. Compared to the same month of the previous year, August 2021, the calendar-adjusted Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex was 0.7 percent higher. Strongest Increase in North Rhine-WestphaliaThe Lkw mileage index is not only suitable nationwide but also in some federal states as a leading indicator for economic development, according to BAG. In the industrially developed regions, there is a clear correlation between regional Lkw mileage and regional sales in manufacturing. In city-states and less industrially developed federal states, the correlation is weaker. The largest increase in Lkw mileage compared to the previous month, calendar- and seasonally adjusted, was recorded in North Rhine-Westphalia in August 2022, at 1.7 percent.
Cross-border trips to and from the Czech Republic with the strongest increase compared to July 2022Since April 2022, Lkw toll indices for cross-border trips have also been available. These indices measure the number of entries and exits across the German border. In August 2022, overall cross-border traffic increased by 1.5 percent calendar- and seasonally adjusted. The largest increase, by 3.2 percent calendar- and seasonally adjusted, was recorded at the Czech border. The indices for cross-border trips are published monthly at the same time as the existing Lkw toll mileage index on the online platform of the Federal Statistical Office. Economic activity generates and requires transport services. Therefore, there is a clear correlation between the Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex and indices of economic activity, especially the production index in manufacturing. The Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex thus provides a rough approach to the development of industrial production. Since it is available about a month earlier than the production index, it serves as a leading indicator for economic development. However, a subdivision by industry sectors is not possible.
Daily Values for the Truck-Toll Mileage Index in the "Pulsmesser Wirtschaft" AvailableIn addition to the monthly index, an experimental daily truck-toll mileage index for Germany is published. The daily values are part of the indicator set of the "Pulsmesser Wirtschaft" in the Germany Dashboard. With this tool, various statistics and features can be conveniently compared in a graphic. The combination of high-frequency indicators thus makes it possible to observe economic development almost in real-time.

Lkw-Maut: Fahrleistungsindex Falls in December
Update from 09.01.2024 by Nadine Bradl
The Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex fell by 3.5 percent in December 2023 compared to the previous month and the same month of the previous year.
The mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on federal highways decreased in December 2023 compared to November 2023 by 3.5 percent calendar- and seasonally adjusted. As reported by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the calendar-adjusted Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex was thus also 3.5 percent below the level of the previous year's month, December 2022.

Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex: Slight Increase in September
Update from 09.10.2023 by Nadine Bradl
A few more trucks were on the road in September compared to August - but compared to the previous year, their number has decreased significantly.
The mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on federal highways increased in September 2023 compared to August 2023 by 0.4 percent calendar- and seasonally adjusted. As reported by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the calendar-adjusted Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex was 2.7 percent lower than in the same month of the previous year, September 2022.

BAG: Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex Rises - Especially in North Rhine-Westphalia
Update from 09.09.2022 by Nadine Bradl
In August, the Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex rose, most notably in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Saarland, however, recorded a decline. Significantly more trucks also crossed the German-Czech border.
The time series with raw and calendar- and seasonally adjusted values begins in July 2018.

Toll Mileage Index: Fewer Transports on Germany's Roads
Update from 10.08.2022 by Christine Harttmann
The currently published Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex by the Federal Office for Freight Transport shows: there are fewer trucks on the road - especially between Poland and Germany.
As reported by the Federal Office for Freight Transport (BAG) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on federal highways decreased in July 2022 by 1.4 percent compared to June 2022, calendar- and seasonally adjusted. Compared to the same month of the previous year, July 2021, the calendar-adjusted Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex was 1.6 percent lower. The Lkw mileage on highways provides early indications of the current economic development in the industry. Strongest Decline in SaxonyThe Lkw mileage index is not only suitable nationwide but also in some federal states as a leading indicator for economic development. In the industrially developed regions, there is a clear correlation between regional Lkw mileage and regional sales in manufacturing. In city-states and less industrially developed federal states, the correlation is weaker. The largest decline in Lkw mileage compared to the previous month, calendar- and seasonally adjusted, was recorded in Saxony in July 2022, at 2.6 percent. Since April 2022, Lkw toll indices for cross-border trips have also been available. These indices measure the number of entries and exits across the German border. In July 2022, cross-border traffic declined at all borders compared to the previous month. The strongest decline, by 4.2 percent calendar- and seasonally adjusted, was recorded at the Polish border.

BAG: More Trucks on the Road than in the Previous Month
Update from 08.07.2022 by Nadine Bradl
The Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex rose
by about one percent in June 2022 compared to May - but compared to 2021, this is a slight decrease.
As reported by the Federal Office for Freight Transport (BAG) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on federal highways increased in June 2022 by 0.9 percent compared to May 2022, calendar- and seasonally adjusted. Compared to the same month of the previous year, June 2021, the calendar-adjusted Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex was 1.3 percent lower. The Lkw mileage on highways provides early indications of the current economic development in the industry. Strongest Increase in Lower SaxonyThe Lkw mileage index is not only suitable nationwide but also in some federal states as a leading indicator for economic development, according to BAG. In the industrially developed regions, there is a clear correlation between regional Lkw mileage and regional sales in manufacturing. In city-states and less industrially developed federal states, the correlation is weaker. The largest increase in Lkw mileage compared to the previous month, calendar- and seasonally adjusted, was recorded in Lower Saxony in June 2022, at 1.8 percent.
Cross-border trips to and from the Czech Republic with the highest increaseSince April 2022, Lkw toll indices for cross-border trips have also been available. These indices measure the number of entries and exits across the German border. The highest increase, calendar- and seasonally adjusted, of 2.7 percent compared to the previous month was recorded in June 2022 at the Czech border. For cross-border trips to and from Poland, however, the strongest decline was recorded (-2.3 percent). The indices for cross-border trips are published monthly at the same time as the existing Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex on the online platform of the Federal Statistical Office. The time series with raw and calendar- and seasonally adjusted values begins in July 2018. Connection Between Lkw Traffic and Economic DevelopmentEconomic activity generates and requires transport services, and there is therefore a clear correlation between the Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex and indices of economic activity, especially the industrial production index. The Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex thus provides a rough approximation of the development of industrial production. Since it is available about a month earlier than the production index, it serves as a leading indicator for the current economic development. A subdivision of the results by industry sector is, however, not possible. In the course of the Lkw toll survey, digital process data is generated, among other things, on the mileage of toll trucks in Germany. The Federal Office for Freight Transport has developed the Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex, which traces the course of mileage. The Federal Statistical Office prepares the index as a seasonally adjusted economic indicator for Germany and the 16 federal states. Daily Truck Mileage IndexIn addition to the monthly index, an experimental daily Lkw toll mileage index at the national level is published. Information on the daily index can be found in the article "Daily Lkw Toll Mileage Index from Digital Process Data of the Lkw Toll Survey" co-authored by the Federal Statistical Office, the Federal Office for Freight Transport, and the Deutsche Bundesbank in the 4/2020 issue of the Statistical Office's scientific magazine WISTA.
As part of the "Toll Statistics," BAG has been evaluating toll data since January 2008. The extent of the toll road network as well as the total weight of vehicles and vehicle combinations subject to tolls have changed over time. The Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex largely excludes such structural changes, so that economic development becomes more visible. Further results of the Federal Office for Freight Transport's Toll Statistics are available with differentiations of toll mileage, for example by registration state or emission class, through the existing publication program of the Federal Office for Freight Transport. Due to the broader data offering and the associated higher evaluation effort, the monthly toll statistics are generally published later than the Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex and are provided without adjustment for seasonal effects and structural changes in toll collection using index calculation.

Lkw mileage on highways is therefore closely linked to industrial production in Germany and provides early indications of current economic development. In the course of the Lkw toll survey, digital process data is generated, among other things, on the mileage of toll trucks in Germany. The Federal Office for Freight Transport has developed the Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex that traces the course of mileage. Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex: Roads Are Getting Busier
Update from 09.02.2022 by Christine Harttmann
More Lkw on the Road Again. The Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex Rises in January 2022 to 3.2 Percent Above the Pre-Crisis Level.
As reported by the Federal Office for Freight Transport (BAG) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on federal highways decreased by 1.4 percent in January 2022 compared to December 2021, calendar- and seasonally adjusted. Nevertheless, compared to January 2021, this represents a slight improvement. In this comparison, the index increased by 1.1 percent, and it was therefore 3.2 percent above the pre-corona crisis level, if one takes the annual average from before the crisis, i.e., March 2019 to February 2020, as a measure. Review by Federal State: Berlin with the Highest Increase Compared to the Previous MonthSince October 2021, Lkw toll mileage indices for the federal states have also been available. The highest increase, calendar- and seasonally adjusted, compared to the previous month was recorded in Berlin, at 3.5 percent. In the Saarland, on the other hand, the largest decrease, at -5.2 percent compared to the previous month, was observed.BAG refers again in the latest statistics to the close connection between Lkw traffic and economic development. Economic activity generates and requires transport services, and the Lkw mileage on highways captured by the index is therefore closely linked to industrial production in Germany and provides early indications of current economic development. In the course of the Lkw toll survey, digital process data is generated, among other things, on the mileage of Lkw in Germany. BAG has developed the Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex that traces the course of mileage. Given its quick availability and economic relevance, the Federal Statistical Office has prepared the index as a seasonally adjusted economic indicator and has included it in its publication program since December 2018.

Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex: Moderated Increase
Update from 09.12.2021 by Christine Harttmann
In November 2021, the mileage of toll trucks increased by 1.3 percent, growing more moderately than in October 2021.
Jointly, the Federal Office for Freight Transport (BAG) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) provided the latest figures for the mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on federal highways. For November 2021, they report a seasonally and calendar-adjusted increase of 1.3 percent compared to October 2021. Thus, the industry index rose by 2.2 percent compared to the previous month's November 2020. Based on the pre-crisis level, i.e., March 2019 to February 2020, the index was 3.2 percent above the annual average. Since October 2021, BAG and Destatis have been showing the data of the individual federal states in their statistics. The highest increase, calendar- and seasonally adjusted, compared to the previous month was recorded in Bavaria, at 2.5 percent. In Saxony-Anhalt, on the other hand, the largest decline, at -0.6 percent compared to the previous month, was reported.

Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex: Hardly Any Changes in September 2021
Update from 08.10.2021 by Christine Harttmann
Just 0.1 percent change in the mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on federal highways in September 2021 compared to August 2021.
As reported by the Federal Office for Freight Transport (BAG) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the mileage increased slightly by 0.3 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, September 2020, calendar- and seasonally adjusted. Compared to the pre-crisis situation, it was also 0.3 percent higher, if one takes the pre-crisis annual average (March 2019 to February 2020) as a measure.
BAG notes that economic activity generates and requires transport services. The Lkw mileage on highways captured by the index is therefore closely linked to industrial production in Germany and provides early indications of current economic development. In the course of the Lkw toll survey, digital process data is generated, among other things, on the mileage of toll trucks in Germany. As part of the "Toll Statistics," BAG has been evaluating the toll data since January 2008. Both the extent of the toll road network and the total weight of vehicles and vehicle combinations subject to tolls have changed over time. The Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex largely excludes such structural changes, making economic development more visible.

Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex: Economic Recovery in Sight
Update from 10.07.2020 by Christine Harttmann
In June 2020, more trucks were on the road again, with mileage increasing by more than four percent.
As reported by the Federal Office for Freight Transport (BAG) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), in June 2020 the mileage of toll trucks with at least four axles on German highways increased by 4.7 percent compared to May 2020, seasonally adjusted. Compared to the same month of the previous year, June 2019, the calendar-adjusted Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex was 3.8 percent lower. For several months, the corona crisis has been shaping the development of the Lkw toll mileage index. Therefore, BAG and Destatis also compare to February 2020, the month before the start of restrictions caused by the corona pandemic in Germany. Seasonally and calendar-adjusted, at that time the Lkw toll mileage was still 6.6 percent higher than in June 2020. Since Lkw mileage is closely related to industrial production in Germany, the index provides early indications for economic development. In the course of the Lkw toll survey, digital process data is generated, among other things, on the mileage of toll trucks in Germany. BAG has developed the Lkw-Maut-Fahrleistungsindex, tracing the course of mileage. Given its quick availability and economic relevance, the Federal Statistical Office has prepared the index as a seasonally adjusted economic indicator and has included it in its publication program since December 2018. Due to the high uncertainty regarding economic development brought by the corona pandemic and the simultaneously high demand for up-to-date economic data, BAG and the Federal Statistical Office update the results during the corona crisis not only monthly but also on a daily working basis. The daily data is published, among other aspects, in a calendar- and seasonally adjusted form, with this adjustment being carried out by the Deutsche Bundesbank. The results thus reflect the mileage very up-to-date with a delay of five to nine days.
