With the introduction of the new eActros 400, Mercedes-Benz Trucks expands its battery-electric offering with a particularly versatile and weight-efficient vehicle variant for heavy distribution transport. The new model generation is technologically based on the eActros 600, which has been in serial production since the end of 2024, but offers targeted optimized features for shorter deployments, a reduced vehicle weight, and a broader range of applications through new chassis and cab options.
Technical profile of the eActros 400 and its differentiation from the eActros 600
The eActros 400 is equipped with two lithium iron phosphate battery packs (LFP), each with a nominal capacity of 207 kWh. This yields an installed total capacity of 414 kWh – the name-giver for the model. In comparison, the eActros 600 has three battery packs with a combined capacity of 621 kWh. This difference affects both range and vehicle weight.
While the eActros 600 is designed for ranges of up to 500 kilometers without mid-charge – in optimal configuration even up to 560 kilometers – the eActros 400 achieves up to 480 kilometers under ideal conditions. This range was determined based on a 6x2 platform chassis with a dry-box body and a partially
loaded trip at 20 °C. The eActros 400 is thus tailored for demanding operations in urban and regional distribution transport.
A central advantage of the eActros 400 is the lower vehicle weight. By omitting a third battery pack, the maximum payload increases to 9.5 tonnes. In combination with a standard trailer, this enables a payload of over 25 tonnes – more than three tonnes more than the eActros 600. Accordingly, the eActros 400 nearly reaches the payload level of conventional diesel trucks.
Both model variants share essential technical features: an integrated e-axle with two electric motors and a four-speed transmission, a system power of 400 kW (continuous) or 600 kW (peak), the onboard network at 800-volt voltage, and modern assistance systems. Also the standard CCS2 charging system allows charging powers of up to 400 kW. Two battery packs can be charged approximately from 10 to 80 percent in about 46 minutes; with three packs the process takes around 70 minutes. The eActros 600 will furthermore in the future support megawatt charging.
Flexible configuration options for the eActros 400
The eActros 400 is designed to be particularly modular and offers numerous options to tailor to individual deployment requirements. Customers
can choose between different body types – as a 4x2 or 6x2 platform chassis as well as a 4x2 tractor unit. Various wheelbases are available: The 4x2 platform chassis come in lengths of 4,000, 5,500, 5,800 and 6,100 millimeters, the 6x2 versions with six wheelbases between 4,000 and 5,800 millimeters. Also new is a tractor unit with a short wheelbase of 3,700 millimeters, which, due to its reduced turning circle, offers advantages especially in tight operation yards and inner-city delivery zones.
In total, the modular combination of battery capacity, chassis, axle configurations and cabs yields over 40 different vehicle variants within the new model generation. This enables Mercedes-Benz Trucks to address specific logistics requirements more precisely – from urban deliveries to heavy distribution transport over medium distances.
Cabin equipment: L-cab or ProCabin
For the driver’s cab, Mercedes-Benz Trucks will in future offer two options for the eActros 400: the proven L-cab and the newly developed ProCabin. Both variants are available for both flatbed trucks and tractor units.
The L-cab, with a width of 2.30 meters, is particularly suitable for applications with frequent driver changes and many stops, thanks to its entry lowered by 170 millimeters. It is available
in Classic or StreamSpace configurations and features a functional cockpit, generous storage, and a standard Multimedia Cockpit Interactive 2. Other comfort features include LED headlights and an ergonomically optimized driver environment. Because of the lower weight, the L-cab also provides a slight payload advantage.
The ProCabin, on the other hand, was designed specifically for long-haul and overnight operations. It features a flat floor layout and is available in three size variants: Stream, Big and Giga. With a width of 2.50 meters and numerous comfort features – including fully-fledged beds with slatted bases, premium mattresses, extended LED reading lamps, ambient lighting, additional USB-C sockets, a second refrigerator and a 230-volt socket – it is designed for maximum living comfort. The aerodynamically optimized exterior shape of the ProCabin also contributes to reducing energy consumption.
Both cabs are equipped with the MirrorCam – a camera-based rear-view mirror system with an extended field of view, wide-angle mode for reversing, dynamic image guidance in curves, and integration into the turning assist Active Sideguard Assist 2.
With the expansion of the second model generation of the eActros, Mercedes-Benz Trucks will discontinue the eActros 300/400 models from the first generation by the end of the
