DHL Global Forwarding has, according to the company, put into operation a newly built air freight hall in the Cargocity South at Frankfurt Airport. The site near Gate 31 has an annual capacity of up to 300,000 tonnes of cargo. Previously the company operated at three locations at the airport and has now centralized its activities.
Capacity and Equipment
The building was constructed, according to Fraport, on a 55,000-square-metre site. Of this, 24,500 square metres are allocated to hall space and 3,000 square metres to office and lounge areas. The property
has 54 gates and truck docks with associated drive and maneuvering areas. In addition, there are 25 parking spaces for trucks and around 185 parking spaces for cars, of which 20 are equipped with charging points for electric vehicles.
"The start of full operations in the state-of-the-art air freight hall by DHL Global Forwarding is an important milestone in the further development of the leading air cargo hub Frankfurt Airport," says Anke Giesen, board member for Retail and Real Estate at Fraport AG. "With the CargoHub master plan, Fraport plans to
increase cargo throughput by about 50 percent by 2040 to around three million tonnes of air freight per year. The new hall is an important project of our Fraport real estate development, which we have now completed as planned."
Sustainability and Energy Supply
On the hall roof, a large-scale photovoltaic system with a peak output of two megawatts is currently being installed. The electricity generated is intended to be fed into the airport's power grid. For the building, the airport operator is pursuing ESG verification under the EU Taxonomy as well
as a Gold certification from the German Sustainable Building Council.
Part of the CargoHub Master Plan
Fraport assigns the new property to the CargoHub master plan, with which the airport operator aims to increase air cargo throughput in Frankfurt to around three million tonnes per year by 2040. According to the company, the plan foresees three focus areas: optimization of existing spaces, development of new spaces, as well as digitalization and process innovations. The goal is to further develop the site in line with the expected demand in the freight sector.
