The Deutsche Telekom and the Finnish software company Unikie have entered into a partnership to scale automated driving in logistics. The new partnership focuses on industrial use cases such as vehicle production, vehicle logistics, bus and tram depots, logistics complexes and parcel centers, as well as special vehicles in ports and forestry. Deutsche Telekom announced this

on June 12.

Using a SIM card, the vehicles connect to Telekom's 5G network and can communicate with the "Unikie Marshalling Solution (UMS)." This solution uses an external sensor infrastructure to control the vehicles. Based on LiDAR sensors ("Light imaging, detection and ranging"), light is used to measure distances and speeds. According to the announcement, this

enables automated, precise, and safe control of vehicles—even in cramped, densely trafficked areas or in poor visibility conditions.

"The complete package of SIM card, network, Edge Cloud, and system integration is offered solely by us from a single source. Combined with Unikie's software for automated driving, we are revolutionizing logistics processes, even beyond the automotive industry.

The Edge Cloud allows us to scale to the European market through the 8ra initiative in the next step," said Christian Hort, Senior Vice President Automotive at T-Systems.

Deutsche Telekom and Unikie are already collaborating in the Volkswagen AutoLog project in Emden. The goal of the Volkswagen project is to automate workflows at the automotive terminal.
