The DHL Group is strategically expanding its Life Sciences & Healthcare (LSH) Campus in Florstadt, Hesse, and is turning the location into the European pharma hub within the framework of its global billion-dollar investments in DHL Health Logistics. With the new, fourth logistics center, the campus grows to a total of 100,000 square meters of storage space, according to a press release from the DHL Group dated May 15. On an area of more than 14 football fields, DHL will offer over 140,000 pallet spaces for pharmaceutical and medical products and serve international customers from biopharma, specialty pharma, medical technology, and clinical research with more than 600 employees.
The new climate-neutral warehouse "Florstadt 4" covers over 30,000 square meters and was specifically designed for the storage and distribution of demanding pharmaceutical and medical products. It features various temperature zones that can reach up to minus 70 degrees Celsius if needed, with
a deliberate focus on the low temperature ranges of two to eight degrees Celsius and minus 20 degrees Celsius. Thus, according to the company, it meets the highest requirements for handling temperature-sensitive products.
With its four specialized warehouses in the geographical center of Central Europe, the location offers suitable logistical connectivity and infrastructure for the storage and distribution of demanding pharmaceutical and medical products. In addition, specialized services such as sample collection, support for clinical studies, and the handling of biopharmaceuticals and cell & gene therapies are provided.
The campus includes a cleanroom that enables GMP-compliant processes for sensitive substances and pharmaceutical raw materials. This includes handling solid and liquid hazardous materials up to 1,000 liters – including APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients) and active substance samples, as well as analytical and microbiological tests. According to DHL, the cleanroom meets the strictest European and international pharmaceutical standards. This is intended to further
expand the strategic importance of the Florstadt location within the global DHL Health Logistics network.
"With the fourth expansion, we are creating capacities for the future in Florstadt," said Hendrik Venter, CEO DHL Supply Chain for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. "From here, we supply customers not only in Germany but across Europe – and beyond."
Its central location in the economic region of Frankfurt, in the heart of Europe, proximity to Frankfurt Airport, and strong infrastructure make Florstadt a key location for their activities and ambitious growth agenda in the Life Science & Healthcare sector.
"Florstadt 4 is a prime example of how we are concretely implementing our Strategy 2030," said Oscar de Bok, Global CEO DHL Supply Chain, who is also the responsible board member for the sector brand DHL Health Logistics. "With investments totaling two billion euros by 2030, we are strengthening our global DHL Health Logistics
network."
Hubs like this one in Florstadt, Hesse, form the backbone of their end-to-end supply chain solutions, which they increasingly offer to customers under one roof. They create resilient supply chains for the next generation of therapies – from biopharma to cell and gene therapy. Their mission is to supply patients worldwide with life-saving medicines at the right time.
DHL Supply Chain relies on complete transparency, compliance, and digitalization in Florstadt – with daily operational processes where the warehouse management system works closely integrated with the IT systems on the customer side. According to the logistics service provider, this also efficiently manages supply chain management for particularly complex and patient-specific products such as clinical trials or temperature-critical specialty medicines.
The LSH Campus features solar thermal panels, air-heat pumps, as well as a comprehensive energy concept with LED light control and a photovoltaic system. According to DHL, the project will be DGNB
