Hamburg Port and Logistics AG (HHLA) is suspending the time-slot binding at the container terminals for electrically operated trucks during a pilot phase. A new category in the slot booking system enables haulage companies to reserve a slot without a fixed time window and to carry out the handling flexibly within the booked day. As HHLA announced on 17 November, this is intended to

take into account the special conditions arising from the necessary charging operations for electric trucks. And they want to send a signal for climate-friendly supply chains.

The regulation has started and applies initially until mid-2026. It is aimed exclusively at electrically powered trucks in the Hamburg port. An additional slot category has been introduced for electric trucks. Freight forwarders book as usual, but are

no longer bound to a concrete time window. The handling can take place within the respective day.

Alignment with the Sustainability Strategy

With the measure, the company aims to support the shift to climate-friendly propulsion. In parallel, the group already operates its own electric trucks at its subsidiaries Metrans and CTD. The goal is company-wide climate neutrality by 2040.

Background Slot Control

The slot

booking system has been in place since 2017 to reduce bottlenecks and relieve traffic conditions at the port. The operator continually develops the system jointly with partners. The temporary lifting of the time-slot binding for electric trucks is the next step in this ongoing development.
