In the Dortmund logistics park "Westfalenhütte" a new terminal for Combined Transport (CT) is to be created, which will specialize in handling trailers in particular. For the construction and operation of the terminal, Duisport, the rail logistics specialist Captrain and the Dortmunder Hafen AG intend to establish a joint venture, as is evident from a joint press release dated 3 November. In this venture, subject to the approval of the competent bodies and antitrust authorities, the Duisburger Hafen AG and Captrain Deutschland GmbH will each hold 45 percent, and the Dortmunder Hafen AG 10 percent.

The

CT Terminal will be built on a currently unused site of about 150,000 square meters belonging to Dortmunder Eisenbahn GmbH, a subsidiary of Captrain and the Dortmunder Hafen AG. The future trailer terminal will include four tracks, each about 400 meters long, a gantry crane and reach stackers, and parking areas for several hundred trailer units. Construction is planned to begin in the second half of 2026, with completion currently targeted for the earliest end of 2027.

Today, between 800 and 900 trucks per day call at the Westfalenhütte logistics park, where the logistics centers of

numerous well-known companies have settled. With the new terminal, according to the announcement, a substantial portion of these movements can be shifted to rail and trailers consolidated in Combined Transport (CT). This should significantly reduce traffic and environmental burdens.

The integration into the rail and inland shipping system LOG4NRW and the connection to the intermodal network of the Duisburg Port should furthermore strengthen the competitiveness of business and industry in North Rhine-Westphalia.

„Rail is not only the most climate-friendly, but also the most capable mode of transport for freight,“ said Henrik Würdemann, managing director of the

Captrain Deutschland Group. „With the planned terminal, we are jointly contributing to a more efficient and sustainable logistics in the Rhine-Ruhr region, ensuring that more goods move onto rail and easing the strained traffic situation.“

Bettina Brennenstuhl, Executive Board member of the Dortmunder Hafen AG, added: „I am pleased that we, as Dortmunder Hafen AG, can actively help shape the transport transition in Dortmund and the region together with two strong partners and contribute to climate protection through the new trailer terminal. It shows that through such cooperations in our industry good and future-proof solutions can
