With the acquisition of the Western European plants of Schumacher Packaging, packaging provider Mondi has integrated high-performance digital printing technology into its own portfolio. Komsa, a distributor for digital infrastructure in Germany, uses this technology to print continuous barcodes directly onto corrugated packaging, without additional labels or manual labeling. This is announced by Mondi in a recent press release.
Komsa ships up to 35,000
packages daily. To ensure next-day delivery with this volume, every time-saving measure is crucial. An important adjustment is the integration of continuous barcodes on the packaging through Mondi's high-performance digital printing.
At Komsa, 60 scanners along the packaging line take over the recording and assignment of the packages. Each shipment has its own individual barcode. Previously, a label dispenser attached the barcodes. Today, they
are already printed on the packaging—precisely placed on all four sides, according to Mondi. According to the packaging provider, this saves time daily, reduces costs, and minimizes sources of error.
"The collaboration with Mondi is a real gain for us—technologically, economically, and strategically," summarizes Harald Josef Ollinger, Vice President Marketing & Communications at Komsa. "We are not only making our logistics processes more efficient
but also more future-proof."
Mondi's high-performance digital printing enables not only individual barcodes but also complex print images in high resolution without any printing plates or clichés. According to Mondi, the process uses water-based, food-safe inks, is resource-saving, and offers increased flexibility. Series, seasonal campaigns, regional designs, and personalized QR codes can be realized in one production run—with short lead times and faster time-to-market,
