Where paper, telephone and fax used to suffice, today data streams flow between warehouses, vehicles and partners around the globe. This not only increases efficiency but also the dependence on secure IT infrastructures. According to a current survey by IT security provider Sophos, more and more companies no longer regard cybersecurity as a marginal topic, but as part of strategic corporate governance. The business field accordingly professionalizes security strategies, as a press release dated September 11 reports.

The survey was conducted in September 2025 by Techconsult on behalf of Sophos. In total, 147 professionals and executives from the logistics sector in Germany

participated. The participants come from companies of all sizes—from SMEs to international corporations.

Almost three-quarters of the logistics companies surveyed now regard cybersecurity as strategically important—both in their own operations and along the supply chain. The finding that protective measures are not only technical but also business-critical in significance has arrived in the industry, it says. Decisions on IT security are now being made more and more often directly at the executive management level.

Digital connectivity makes organizations vulnerable

About 68 percent of the companies are already digitally connected with customers or suppliers, almost 30 percent even worldwide. More than half use

over 50 digital interfaces such as cloud services, partner portals or APIs. This close interconnection increases efficiency and transparency, but also opens up new entry points for attacks.

Many companies have already reacted, according to Sophos, and are relying on technical as well as organizational security measures. 63 percent have backup strategies, 61 percent regularly train their employees, and more than half use external security services or SOC/SIEM solutions. Nevertheless, there remains a certain vulnerability, especially when security concepts are not regularly reviewed and updated to current threat situations.

Cybersecurity as an ongoing task

The survey makes clear that cybersecurity in logistics

has already become a strategic, ongoing task, the study authors conclude. Many companies have laid the technical foundations, but now face the challenge of establishing security as a continuous process across all business decisions and across departmental boundaries in a durable and reliable manner.

„The industry has taken the right course. Digitalization and security are increasingly being thought of together,“ says Michael Veit, security expert at Sophos. „To withstand growing threats, it makes sense to network management, IT and operational areas even more closely. A living security culture, supported and exemplified by leadership, strengthens the long-term stability and trust in digital processes.“
