According to mobility provider ÖBB, since the end of 2016 the multifunctional freight center on the southern outskirts of Vienna has served as the "main station" of freight traffic. There intermodal transport units from around the world are transshipped between road and rail.
The freight center was built from 2013 to 2016 in the south of Vienna at the intersection of the Pottendorfer Line and the Vienna Outer Ring Expressway S1. As a location advantage, the company cites its proximity to the S1 expressway, the Südbahn line, and three Trans-European rail corridors.
This makes switching from road to rail in the eastern region attractive and facilitates access to important economic centers in Europe.
Increase
of 44 percent
Now the company wants to meet rising demand and expand capacities. For this reason, construction work for the final expansion phase "Phase 2" will begin in early September 2025.
The plan is to increase terminal capacity by the end of 2026 from 380,000 to 547,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) – this corresponds to an increase of 44 percent.
Additional tracks and turnout connections are to be created for handling the freight transshipment. This would then provide a total of 8 x 700 meter loading tracks.
Automated crane systems
An additional, as well as future automated, portal crane system is also intended to increase efficiency. In addition, according to the information, the
two existing portal cranes will be retrofitted – for future automated operation.
The full expansion measures also include adjustments to roads and other technical facilities, it is said. The construction is handled by the Projects New & Expansion division of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG.
“Rail freight is one of the most important levers for the greening of transport. The now-starting full expansion of the Wien Süd freight center is a strong signal to the economy and the population,” said Judith Engel, head of the Infrastructure Facilities Provisioning department.
Growth trajectory
The Wien Süd terminal is one of seven freight terminals of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG in Austria, operated by Terminal Service Austria (TSA). The core business in Wien
Süd consists of the handling of containers, swap bodies and semi-trailers in unaccompanied intermodal transport.
Since operations began, TSA has progressively developed the site and established it as a hub in the European network of the transport and load industry. With the final expansion, the service portfolio for shippers, forwarders, operators and rail undertakings is to be expanded once again.
