Hitachi Rail, DB Cargo and other partners are preparing to test an automated freight train locomotive. According to a recent press release, the locomotive is equipped with a system for Automated Train Operation (ATO) and Remote Train Operation (RTO). Hitachi Rail provides the ATO onboard system and takes care of system integration. The information comes from a recent statement by Hitachi Rail.
Test operations
on the Betuweroute from October 2025
The testing of the technology is scheduled to begin in October 2025 on the Betuweroute. According to Hitachi Rail, the Dutch route is one of the most important freight corridors in Europe. The aim is to test the systems under real conditions and, based on the results, create the foundation for a market-ready, commercially viable product in automated
freight transport.
The statement says the project supports one of Europe's most important transport policy goals: shifting more freight to rail. The locomotive will be used by DB Cargo. Other project partners are not mentioned by name.
Federal Ministry supports the project
The project has been running since November 2022 and is financially supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport. It is part of
Hitachi Rail's commitment to sustainable and digitally connected rail mobility.
Daniel Stoll, Project Manager at Hitachi Rail in Germany, explains:
“This project is exemplary of our aim to create concrete solutions for the mobility of tomorrow through technological excellence.” He further states: “Automation is the key to using capacities more efficiently, reducing energy consumption, and making rail freight transport more attractive, efficient, and future-proof.”
