The Austrian Post will completely convert its delivery fleet in Vienna to CO2-free vehicles by the end of 2025. In the future, more than two million people in the federal capital will receive letters, packages, newspapers, and brochures exclusively on foot, by bicycle, or electrically. For business customers, this means that shipments will be delivered on the so-called "last mile" in a climate-neutral manner – a significant contribution to reducing the city’s traffic CO2 footprint and a plus for companies with sustainability goals.

400 more e-vehicles by the end of 2025 in Vienna

Today, around 700 e-vehicles are already in operation in Vienna. By the end of the year, another 400 vehicles

will be added, so the entire fleet is converted to emission-free drives. Delivery is carried out through 17 letter and three parcel bases in the urban area, as well as a location in Hagenbrunn near Vienna. More than 1,500 delivery personnel will be CO2-free on the road – with e-vans, e-bikes, e-mopeds, or on foot.

Charging infrastructure, e-vehicles, photovoltaic

The Post is investing around 32 million euros in charging infrastructure and new vehicles. At the same time, the expansion of its own photovoltaic systems has been greatly advanced: At 34 locations, solar systems with over 18 megawatt-peak output already provide about 20 percent of the energy demand from self-produced energy. According to

the company, the Post is not only one of the largest operators of photovoltaic systems in Austria (excluding energy providers) but is also working on making vehicles usable as mobile energy storage in the medium term.

Shipments with label "CO2-free delivered"

The conversion brings several advantages for business customers: Shipments in Vienna can in the future be advertised with the addition "CO2-free delivered" – a clear sign of sustainable logistics. For sensitive industries, such as pharmaceuticals, food, or high-value consumer goods, locally emission-free delivery also offers a positive signal for environmental awareness along the supply chain. With this step, the Austrian Post underscores its claim to actively contribute to the achievement of

climate goals as a logistics partner – reliably, comprehensively, and transparently.

Fleet is being converted to electric vehicles nationwide

Early in 2025, the Austrian Post AG put its 5,000th e-vehicle into service – a new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter. More than half of the company’s approximately 10,000 delivery vehicles are electrically powered. According to its own information, their operation is entirely CO2-free thanks to the use of electricity from renewable sources.

Deutsche Post DHL is also investing in the electrification of its services. For example, at the end of 2024, the integrated location in Nuremberg was electrified with 188 AC charging points and extensive charging infrastructure. The vast site required individually adapted installations with
