With a strategically important step, Daimler Truck expands its presence on the Japanese commercial vehicle market. From now on, the heavy-duty trucks of the Mercedes-Benz ranges Arocs and Actros are also available in Japan. Sales are carried out through the long-standing partner Y-Engineering, which has been importing the Unimog and Econic models for two decades and operates a nationwide service network, the company said.
Market launch at the Japan Mobility Show
Officially unveiled will be the flagship of the range, the Arocs 4763 8x6, at the Japan Mobility Show (JMS) in Tokyo from October 29 to November 9, 2025. The model will be presented there in the colors of the Japanese flag – a symbolically significant market launch.
Daimler Truck sees considerable potential in Japan for the highly specialized vehicles, which are used particularly in transporting especially large and heavy loads – from wind turbines to generators and transformers to heat exchangers for infrastructure projects.
Technical features and market adaptations
The Arocs 4763 8x6 is equipped with the OM 473: 15.6-liter displacement, 625 hp and 3,000 Nm of torque. In combination with the 16-speed Powershift 3 Advanced transmission and a specially developed semi-trailer coupling, the vehicle can haul loads of up to 500 tonnes.
Special attention was paid to adapting to Japanese regulations. Since in Japan a maximum vehicle height of 3.8 meters applies, Mercedes-Benz Trucks for the first time developed a combination of the ClassicSpace
2.3 cab and a compact cooling tower on a four-axle chassis. This enables the machine, despite the low overall height, to provide the additional cooling required for heavy-duty transports.
Also in terms of safety, the models set new standards: The Active Brake Assist 6, the Lane Keeping Assist ASGA2, an Attention Assist, and the Front Guard Assist are part of the standard equipment.
Production and conversion
The vehicles intended for Japan are manufactured in serial production at the Wörth plant and subsequently converted at the Molsheim plant in the "Custom Tailored Trucks (CTT)" area. There the trucks receive, among other things, the fourth axle, the additional cooling tower, and the heavy-duty coupling.
Sales and service through Y-Engineering
With
Y-Engineering, Daimler Truck relies on an experienced importer. The company, based in Yokohama, operates five own branches and draws on a network of over 100 service partners. For Japanese freight forwarders, this means comprehensive after-sales support—a decisive factor for vehicles that are regularly operated at the limits of their load capacity.
Significance for the Japanese market
The demand for heavy-duty transports is growing in Japan. Above all, the expansion of renewable energy, new infrastructure projects and the replacement of old industrial facilities require transport capacity for oversized components. Stina Fagerman, Head of Marketing, Sales and Services at Mercedes-Benz Trucks, speaks of a "real milestone for the Japanese transport industry." Even before the official introduction, existing customers had signaled
