The Ernst Riedler Fahrzeugbau- und VertriebsgesmbH, based in Oberweis, Upper Austria, has implemented two vehicle solutions for Swiss transport companies that enable a reduction of the load-dependent heavy vehicle levy (LSVA) in timber transport. The basis is a piggyback principle, wherein the stake trailer is lifted onto the loading area of the tractor unit during empty trips with the help of a wood-loading crane. The return trip is thus made without a trailer, reducing the permissible gross vehicle weight of the vehicle combination and thereby lowering the LSVA calculation basis.

LSVA: Emissionsklasse, gefahrene Kilometer und zulässiges Gesamtgewicht entscheiden

The LSVA is calculated in Switzerland from the emission class, kilometres driven, and the permissible gross weight of the actually used vehicle combination. If the trailer

is transported as cargo on the truck, only the weight of the tractor unit is included in the calculation. This results in lower tonne-kilometres and correspondingly lower charges for empty trips.

For one of the two solutions, a stake assembly with ExTe quick-release stakes was used. These can be released via an integrated mechanism with a foot pedal and swapped into prepared stake pockets behind the front wall. There they are secured with a strap. The telescopic stakes of the tandem trailer are inserted, and the stake posts are manually flipped. Subsequently, a crane lifting yoke is folded up at the ring-hook guard and locked. Through this lifting yoke, the trailer can be hoisted onto the loading surface with the wood loading crane.

To

lower onto the deck, the trailer's draw eye is guided over a bolt integrated into the front wall. The trailer is then positioned on the loading surface, the air suspension lowered, and the vehicle secured with two tie-down straps. The entire process can be completed within a few minutes.

In the second vehicle configuration, a configuration without a continuous deck is used. Instead, two ExTe folding saddles were hydraulically retrofit, so that the stakes can be folded crosswise to the direction of travel from the crane seat via a control valve. Here too, the telescopic stakes are inserted first and the stake posts on the trailer manually flipped. The trailer is then loaded with the rear end first. The rear end is centered in

a recess in the front wall, the draw eye secured in a foldable support, and the trailer secured with a ratchet strap.

Both variants enable the trailer to be carried piggyback up to the loading point in the forest. Only after turning the tractor unit is the trailer set down on the forest road and coupled. The systems thus offer advantages in tight spaces and increase flexibility in vehicle deployment.

The company Riedler was founded in 1953 and is in its third generation of family ownership. At the Oberweis site near Gmunden, around 50 employees produce commercial vehicle solutions on 5,500 square meters for timber, wood chip and general cargo transports as well as special-purpose vehicles for specific
