The Federal Association of German Truck Stops (VEDA) is a new supporting member of the Federal Association of Road Haulage, Logistics and Disposal (BGL). Together, both organizations aim to address central challenges in the logistics industry - especially in the areas of driver supply, safety at parking areas along highways, and shaping the mobility transition.

“VEDA and our members see ourselves as an open space for developments that actively shape the mobility transition, while keeping all road users in mind,” said Daniel Ruscheinsky, Chairman of the VEDA board.

A special focus is on the truck drivers: Truck stops not only provide food services but also clean sanitary facilities and safe, modern parking lots for daily rest periods, Ruscheinsky noted.

“VEDA truck parking” for increased safety of trucks and drivers

According to the VEDA, its goal

is to create a platform for innovative developments with its members that includes all road users. The focus is particularly on the situation of truck drivers: Truck stops should not only offer food services but also modern and secure parking lots as well as clean sanitary facilities for the legally required rest times.

A key project in this context is the “VEDA truck parking” system. Together with security experts from the industry, VEDA has developed an open system aimed at systematic monitoring and control of parking facilities. Access controls, video surveillance, and documentation of arrival and departure times are central elements. The goal is to build a network of strong partners to counteract the increasing crime and cargo thefts.

Monitored parking spaces with Wi-Fi and comfort

The “VEDA truck parking” system deliberately differs from previous

concepts of so-called high-security parking lots. It relies on deterrence and clarification to prevent or elucidate incidents. To this end, all access routes and peripheral areas of the parking spaces are comprehensively monitored, and if necessary, the recorded material is made available to law enforcement agencies. In addition to this security aspect, the system also offers more comfort: Many parking spaces are equipped with Wi-Fi to increase the quality of stay for drivers. Operators of truck stops or truck parking areas can join this open system.

Advantages for drivers and transport companies

The BGL also sees the closer cooperation with VEDA as an important step to more effectively implement shared goals for the protection and supply of drivers. This considers not only the interests of transport companies but also those of the truck drivers.

“The

BGL has always advocated not only for the interests of transport companies but also for the interests of truck drivers. Therefore, we greatly welcome the enhanced cooperation with VEDA as the leading organization of German truck stops, wholeheartedly in the interests of our truck drivers,” said BGL spokesman Prof. Dr. Dirk Engelhardt.

Founded in 1995, VEDA now represents over 106 truck stops in Germany and provides a total of around 10,000 truck and car parking spaces. Its goal is to establish new quality standards for travelers and improve stays at highway rest areas. The BGL, in turn, has been the leading representative for road freight transport, logistics, and disposal in Germany since 1947 and currently represents around 7,000 companies.
