Kloeckner Metals Germany GmbH has at the Würzburg site eight fully electric heavy‑duty trucks of the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 from Daimler Truck put into operation. With the fleet expansion, the company continues its strategy to electrify logistics and transport in steel and metal processing. Already in 2023, a first vehicle of the eActros 300 type was put into service in Würzburg. The fleet in southern Germany now comprises nine electric trucks in total — that is one third of the company’s entire truck fleet in this region.
Low-emission logistics as a goal
The switch to fully electric commercial vehicles is part of a comprehensive transformation
process through which Kloeckner Metals Germany aims to make its logistics more low‑emission and future‑proof. With the vehicles now deployed, more than 400 tonnes of CO₂ will be saved annually. The measure fits into the climate strategy of the parent company Klöckner & Co, which has committed to reducing its directly controllable emissions to net zero by 2040. Indirect emissions, particularly from purchased steel products, are also to be climate neutral by 2050 at the latest.
The new eActros 600 trucks have a payload capacity of up to 22 tonnes and a range of over 500 kilometres per charging cycle — and that without intermediate
charging. Two integrated electric motors deliver a continuous power of 400 kilowatts. The lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP) used are regarded as durable and cycle-stable. They operate without critical raw materials such as cobalt and nickel and, according to the manufacturer, achieve a lifespan of up to 1.2 million kilometres.
Charging infrastructure with up to 400 kilowatts of charging capacity
The technical infrastructure includes charging infrastructure with a charging capacity of up to 400 kilowatts, deployed at the Würzburg, Nuremberg and Regensburg locations. The system is complemented by the dynamic load management software "Merlin" from Avalon Solutions GmbH, which is intended to ensure efficient energy
distribution during the charging process.
Kloeckner Metals Germany operates a total of 27 own trucks in southern Germany. The new electric vehicles integrate into the existing fleet and undertake transports to customers in southern Germany. The aim is to continue ensuring the supply reliably, on time, and in a more climate-friendly way. Looking ahead, the electric fleet is to grow further.
The new electric trucks will in the future also bear Kloeckner's "Nexigen" umbrella brand on the trailer’s tarpaulin. "Nexigen" stands for transparent, CO₂-reduced material, service, and logistics solutions. The company thereby supports its customers in building sustainable value chains—from material provisioning through processing to
