From 2026 onward, a Lockheed L-1649A Super Star will be on display in the Lufthansa Group's new conference and visitor center at Frankfurt am Main Airport. Gruber Logistics carried out the transport of the aircraft on behalf of Lufthansa.
Planning and Preparation
The Lockheed Super Star dates from the 1950s, belongs to the Constellation family, and was incorporated into Lufthansa's fleet in 1957. Before the transport, it was comprehensively restored by Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg. The transfers were planned over a period
of more than a year and a half, reports Gruber Logistics. 3D object scans, computer simulations, and route checks were used in the process.
Procedure of the Transports
The fuselage and tailplane as well as both wings were transported by Gruber Logistics in July 2025 from Hamburg Airport to Münster/Osnabrück Airport. In August the onward transport to Frankfurt Airport took place. The aircraft has a length of 35 meters and a wingspan of 45 meters. For the transportation, the company used, depending
on the component, kettle bridges and telescopic semi-trailers.
"This project was, for all parties involved, a once-in-a-lifetime constellation, if you allow me this wordplay on the Super Constellation. The transports proved exciting and challenging for the planners, the professional drivers, the escort personnel and the partners involved. In a large team, we succeeded in bringing back to its home port a unique, and thus very valuable, specimen of aviation history, so that it can be made visible there again," emphasizes Michael Gruber,
Managing Director of Gruber Logistics Deutschland and head of the GST division.
Execution at Night
The transports took place at night each time in order to reduce traffic load on the affected highways and roads. Before the onward transport to Hesse, the aircraft received a special coating in Münsterland in the classic Lufthansa design.
Significance for Lufthansa
In the future, the Lockheed Super Star, together with a Junkers Ju 52, is to be among the main attractions of the Lufthansa Group's new
