"Economically and Ecologically: Designing Packaging Logistics Economically and Environmentally" was the theme on May 14 in a panel of the CONFERENCE DAYS 2025. The digital B2B knowledge and networking event of the Munich-based HUSS-VERLAG thus focused on one of the most critical points of the supply chain, as moderator and LOGISTIK HEUTE editor Sandra Lehmann highlighted at the beginning of the discussion: Not only are reliable packaging demanded, they should also be compliant with the requirements of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) of the European Union and correspond to economic logics.
Claus Weigel, International Senior Sales Manager of Sparck Technologies, dedicated his presentation to the role of packaging machines regarding economic and ecological aspects. He
presented Sparck Technologies' Fit-to-Size approach, in which customized packaging is developed for various items together with the user companies.
"Our machines can achieve throughputs per hour equivalent to 20 employees," emphasized Weigel.
Above all, tailored packaging can reduce packaging materials and completely or nearly replace filling material – and minimize transport costs. "You simply ship less air," said Weigel.
Small Measure, Big Impact
Armin Spitzbarth, Sales Director E-Commerce of Thimm Verpackung GmbH + Co. KG, focused on packaging materials and particularly corrugated board.
"Our customers now place great value on corporate responsibility and sometimes demand exact figures on greenhouse gas emissions in packaging production," said the Sales Director of the corrugated board specialist.
According to the paper
mill, there are significant differences. Big effects can be achieved in corrugated board with small changes, explained Spitzbarth: Even minor adjustments in waves and paper thicknesses can save emissions to a significant extent – after all, packaging is used massively.
Joshua Linn, founder & CEO of TheOceanPackage, finally gave an insight into "Circular Packaging-as-a-Service". As he pointed out, according to PPWR, 65 percent of the packaging used in the EU must be reusable or recyclable by 2030. TheOceanPackage offers companies access to reusable packaging in various models for this purpose: as a subscription, as a rental or exchange system or as a solution for intralogistics.
"For our customer Christ, we have, for example, developed packaging that is
used in the fulfillment centers and internal goods traffic to the Christ branches," described Linn.
To share experiences and advance the reusable approach, TheOceanPackage has joined forces with around 70 European companies in the "New European Reuse Alliance".
