In the Dortmund Logistics Park Westfalenhütte, a new terminal for intermodal transport is being built. According to the involved companies, Duisburger Hafen AG (Duisport), Captrain Deutschland GmbH and the Dortmunder Hafen AG plan to form a joint venture for this. The aim is the construction and operation of a modern transshipment terminal that specializes in trailer traffic.

It is planned that duisport and Captrain will each take 45 percent of the shares, while the Dortmunder Hafen AG will hold 10 percent. The implementation is, according to the press release, subject to the approval of the competent

committees and antitrust authorities.

Infrastructure for intermodal transport

The terminal is to be built on a currently unused site of around 150,000 square meters belonging to Dortmunder Eisenbahn GmbH, a subsidiary of Captrain and the Dortmunder Hafen AG. The facility will include four tracks about 400 meters long each, a gantry crane and several reach stackers. In addition, storage areas for several hundred trailer units are planned.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026. Completion is currently targeted for no earlier than the end of 2027.

Relief for road traffic and the

environment

The Westfalenhütte Logistics Park is currently served daily by around 800 to 900 trucks. With the new terminal, large parts of these transports are expected to be shifted to rail in the future. According to the involved companies, the project thus contributes to reducing traffic volume and emissions in the region.

„We have already proven several times in Duisburg over the past 25 years that we can actively shape and advance structural change,“ says duisport CEO Markus Bangen. „I look forward to bringing our experience and know-how to Dortmund and to see our long-standing partnership

and cooperation with the Dortmunder Hafen as well as our collaboration with Captrain reflected in this joint project.“

Integration into regional logistics networks

The integration into the rail and inland waterway system Log4NRW and the connection to the intermodal network of the Duisburger Hafen strengthen the economic and industrial location of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The cooperation of the three partner companies is part of a regional initiative to promote sustainable freight transport. The aim is to further push ahead with the transport transition in the state and to strengthen rail as a high-capacity carrier in freight transport.(av)
