This summer, time-limited driving bans for heavy trucks will again apply on German motorways and federal highways. To assist the affected drivers with their route planning, the Federal Association of Road Haulage, Logistics and Disposal (BGL) is providing an updated alternative route map. According to the association, the digital map has now been integrated into the Autobahn GmbH app.

The holiday travel regulation prescribes driving bans for certain vehicle groups on every Saturday in the months of July and August. Affected are trucks with trailers, articulated lorries, and solo trucks with a permissible total mass of over 7.5 tons. From July 5 to August 30, 2025, inclusive, these vehicles may not travel on numerous motorway

sections and some federal roads from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. To avoid traffic jams and delays, the BGL recommends the use of alternative routes.

According to the BGL, the alternative route map has been revised in coordination with the relevant traffic authorities. It aims to help truck drivers find suitable bypasses in good time. The association provides the map in digital form, among other things as part of the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes app. Users who have already installed the app should update it. Additionally, the map is also available on the BGL website.

BGL Board Spokesman Prof. Dr. Dirk Engelhardt emphasized in a joint press release with Autobahn GmbH:

“We hope to make

the work easier for all lorry drivers who are on duty even on Saturdays for our supply with the free digital alternative route map this year as well. Many thanks to Autobahn GmbH for integrating the map into the app.”

Dr. Michael Güntner, Chairman of the Executive Board of Autobahn GmbH, also referred to the importance of digital offerings in traffic management:

“The motorway is the central transport route for our goods. To support the lorry drivers during the heavy travel traffic of the summer months, we have once again integrated the alternative route map into the Autobahn app this year. The close cooperation with the BGL once again demonstrates how digital solutions can help

relieve traffic and at the same time improve travel quality for all road users.”

The Autobahn GmbH app is available for Android- and iOS-devices. In addition to the alternative route map, it offers further information on traffic conditions, construction sites, and rest areas along the motorways. The map can also be downloaded directly from the BGL website.
