After more than 20 years, the terminal's operator, which has been in the ownership of the Planning Company for Combined Transport mbH (PKV) since 1991, will change. The new operator is to be managed by Kombiverkehr Intermodal Services GmbH Duisburg, a group company of Kombiverkehr KG. From the takeover the terminal “Duisburg-Ruhrort Hafen DUSS” will operate under the new name “Rail Hub Duisburg,” according to the company.

Heiko Krebs, Managing Director of Kombiverkehr KG:

“From Duisburg, more than 20 countries are reachable by

rail. Thus the continental terminal in the Ruhrort port is an important gateway node in our European network. We currently handle around 95 percent of the traffic. In the future we can contribute our production and technical know-how much more directly than before, and of course access to the terminal infrastructure will continue to be non-discriminatory for third parties. We want to respond quickly to the needs of customers and users and thereby better support the relocation of their transports to the environmentally

friendly rail. In addition, there are already, in collaboration with the owner, technical developments in joint planning that will ensure the future viability of this important terminal.”

Moving 75-tonne heavy tank containers

The PKV terminal was built in the early 1990s and commissioned in 1992. Since 2003 it has been operated by DUSS (Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene-Straße mbH), in which Kombiverkehr KG holds a 12.5 percent stake.

On an area of around 85,000 square meters, currently three cranes over eight tracks and one track

with a reachstacker operation ensure a rapid interchange of intermodal loading units between trains or from road to rail.

From the end of autumn 2025, one of the recently procured crane installations with a special spreader should also be able to move tank containers weighing up to 75 tonnes. In addition, there are storage areas outside the crane track, including two hazardous goods tanks for the transport-related storage of hazardous materials. The facility is designed for an annual throughput capacity of around 200,000
